With a lot of pride in what we’ve accomplished, and even more excitement about what’s ahead, I’m announcing today that I’m running for re-election as Mayor of Port Coquitlam. This city has always been home. It’s where I grew up, where Blaire and I are raising our boys, and where I’ve had the incredible privilege of serving as your Mayor. When you first put your trust in me, I promised to work hard, stay focused on what matters in people’s everyday lives, and deliver results. Together, we’ve kept taxes and utilities the lowest in the region while investing in the things people rely on every day: great parks and recreation facilities, clean and safe neighbourhoods, new services like curbside glass and large-item pickup, and free swimming at our outdoor pools to name just a few, all while building a community we can be proud to call home. We’ve accomplished a lot for Port Coquitlam. But I know there is more work to do. I’ll keep bringing the same approach to the job: work hard, go the extra mile, make responsible decisions, always listen and never be afraid to stand up for Port Coquitlam. I love this city, and I’m asking for your support to continue serving our community and moving Port Coquitlam forward. mayorbradwest.ca

$1,589. Every. Single. Year. That’s how much less the average Port Coquitlam homeowner pays in municipal taxes and utilities compared to the Metro Vancouver average. When I was first elected Mayor, PoCo was around the regional average. Today? We’re the lowest. And we didn’t get there by cutting core services or dinging people with new and inflated fees. We built new recreation facilities. Improved our parks and roads. Added curbside glass and large-item pickup. Invested in public safety. We also might be the last place in the Lower Mainland without paid parking. To get there we completed core service reviews, department efficiency assessments, reduced consultant use to the bare minimum, eliminated studies/reports that go nowhere, reallocated existing resources to ensure today’s dollars aren’t spent on last decade’s priorities, and literally went through the budget line-by-line. Most importantly, we don’t stop doing this work. It’s not one and done. It’s ongoing. I’m proud of what we’ve built in Port Coquitlam and even more excited about where we’re headed. By staying focused on the basics and challenging ourselves to always do better, we can continue delivering the high-quality services residents expect with the fiscal responsibility they deserve.

Calling all restaurants, pubs & hospitality businesses in BC and beyond - Port Coquitlam isn’t just open for business - we WANT your business! Our regulatory overhaul is in effect and we’ve made our city the easiest place to open & expand your business. Looking for a new home or for your next location? Look to @cityofpoco! Contact me at [email protected] or 604-927-5498 to be a part of Port Coquitlam’s next chapter.
Governments at all levels and of all stripes have been very good at creating new rules. Much less good at asking whether those rules still make sense. Over time, regulations accumulate. They pile up year after year, often long after the problem they were meant to solve has changed or disappeared altogether. The result is a system that becomes more complicated, more expensive, and less responsive to the people it’s supposed to serve. In Port Coquitlam, we’ve just finished taking a hard look at our hospitality regulations, and we went directly to the people on the ground, running hospitality businesses. Together, we called a time-out and asked some simple questions: Does this rule still serve a purpose? Can it be modernized? Can it be simplified? Should it exist at all? The result of this work is that Port Coquitlam Council has approved the elimination or modernization of dozens of out-of-date, or simply nonsensical regulations. I’m proud of this work, and how quickly we completed it. The next step is to replicate the approach in a well thought out way for our entire system of regulations and bylaws because our belief is that government shouldn’t be measured by how many rules it creates. It should be measured by whether those rules actually make life better. For more details visit portcoquitlam.ca/media

Yesterday, Port Coquitlam City Council received a report providing analysis of property taxes & utility fees in our city & across the region. There were several important findings: 1) Port Coquitlam has the lowest property taxes & utility fees of any city in the region for a representative house. And not just by a few dollars. The amount paid is approx $1800 less than the Metro Vancouver average. That’s real money staying with PoCo residents. 2) Not only is the total amount paid the lowest, the % increase over the last 5 years has also been the lowest in the region. 3) There are a number of items included in your property tax bill that are not set by the city and not retained by the city, notably including charges from Metro Vancouver Regional District, Translink, and a School Tax from the province. These line items have escalated significantly more, in fact Port Coquitlam has experience the highest rate of School Tax increases in the entire region (despite the lack of school investment in our community). I’m very proud of the level of fiscal responsibility & discipline we have demonstrated in Port Coquitlam, year over year. This isn’t a one-off for us, this is how we govern. As we begin our budget process, residents can expect the same commitment and results. Full report available here: pub-portcoquitlam.escribemee…
