Putting a country's leader on trial once seemed unimaginable, but as @stevecrawshaw describes the possibilities of justice have been transformed . . .

I'm looking forward to reading this v timely book by @stevecrawshaw who gave an inspiring speech last night about the moral courage it takes to bring war crimes perpetrators to justice. I woke up to media hesitating to call Trump's plan for #Gaza what it is - a war crime.
I am mostly now at the Other Place. But/and: many thanks @KenRoth !, and back at you: I look forward very much to reading yours on partly intersecting themes in difficult times
In his new book, "Prosecuting the Powerful," @SteveCrawshaw traces the history of international justice and shows why, despite inevitable transgressions, the possibility of bringing perpetrators to justice is growing. theguardian.com/books/2025/j…
Thank you to so many people who helped make this book what it is. Out 6 February — more about this in weeks and months to come, in the other place.
Moving memories of the brilliant & generous Paul Lowe, photographer for the ages. RIP
Paul Lowe will, naturally, be remembered for his work and the quality and significance of it. His outstanding contribution, as an award-winning photojournalist and as an academic, has, after all, left a significant legacy.

This one was tough to write. I’ve edited Kim for more than a decade, with him covering all corners of the world. His job was never to make mine easy - he was always the first to head to a frontline. But he did so with humour and his reporting was superb.

This is such horribly shocking news. generous fearless brilliant, will be so much missed independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho…
Madness left behind, finally. Amazing that any British government could ever have thought blocking justice was a good idea. theguardian.com/law/article/…
This is SUCH an important call by @YasmineAhmed001 @hrw — extraordinary that current govt is still lost in Sunak morasse of challenging (British) chief prosecutor who seeks Gaza indictments & justice at ICC theguardian.com/global-devel…

Western liberal politicians and media like to blame Netanyahu for everything that's wrong in Israel. That is a false and dangerous notion. All Zionist "opposition" parties (Gantz, Lapid) and President Herzog condemning Khan just shows Israelis either deny or justify war crimes
Huge congratulations to @Trial and all those they have worked with to get this result — important not just for itself but what it can herald for future
🚨BREAKING: Ousman Sonko, former #Gambian Interior Minister under Yahya Jammeh, has been sentenced by the #Swiss Federal Criminal Court to 20 years in prison for #crimesagainsthumanity.
Read and share this thread… brilliant opportunity for talented young journalist, in memory of generous-spirited genius Rupert Cornwell @Independent. not-to-be-missed…

This essay by @TobiasBuckFT is one of the most brilliant essays on Germany, memory, & identity that you can or will read. Just extraordinary on.ft.com/3IuZG84

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began two years ago, the most useful thing I've done is this lecture series on Ukrainian history.
Thanks to Yale for making it public.
