Four Black girls walked into church in Birmingham, Alabama on September 15, 1963. Addie Mae Collins. Denise McNair. Carole Robertson. Cynthia Wesley. They never walked back out. A Ku Klux Klan bomb ripped through the 16th Street Baptist Church. And let’s stop rewriting the political environment they lived under. Birmingham and Alabama were dominated by Democrats. Bull Connor was a Democratic National Committeeman. Democratic governor John Patterson had openly courted Klan support. George Wallace built his political power around segregation and resistance to integration. The Klan operated with protection and accommodation from parts of the political and law-enforcement establishment. So when people talk about these four girls, tell the whole story. They were Black children targeted by Klansmen inside a political order that tolerated, protected, and exploited segregation. History does not need partisan sanitizing. Remember their names. Remember the Klan. Remember the Democrat politicians who enabled that environment.
