🚨 The Treasury is expected to study the economic gains from moving Britain closer to the EU including a customs union, Single Market membership and potentially full membership. And the numbers are significant. Goldman Sachs estimates: 🇪🇺 Customs union: +1% GDP 🇪🇺 Single Market: +2–5% GDP The OBR still assumes Brexit will leave UK productivity around 4% lower in the long run than if we had remained in the EU. And a recent NBER paper estimates the hit to GDP by the end of 2025 at 6–8%. So when critics cry “Project Fear in reverse”, the answer is simple: this is exactly what the Treasury should be doing. Ten years on, we are no longer arguing only about forecasts. We have real evidence of what Brexit has done to trade, investment and productivity. Given what we now know, what relationship with Europe gives Britain the strongest economy from here? And it looks like government may be preparing to ask that question properly.

I have had I think no cancellations with @Ryanair , @easyJet for me are the main culprit and the further in advance you book, the worse it is. Decided to book with @jet2tweets for my flight, a little dearer, but more reliable

Have to say that they use a very low bar to justify heat pumps here - Jackdaw will create 25 jobs according to the company behind it….. Heat pumps are un economic full stop.   It’s not possible to recoup the cost of them by way of energy bills reductions - 50 years payback (with a 50% grant) with a 15 year equipment life. It’s bonkers to be funding these devices with public money - £8k a pop while 5 million people struggle paying for energy. The fact that new oil and gas drilling does even less for us is nothing to boast about..:) buff.ly/obnccVO

50 years ago, Dave Allen told a joke about newspaper readers in 1976, it would become more famous 11 years after this on Yes, Prime Minister in 1987.

We don’t need to raise taxes on the Banks. We can stop paying them interest on their deposits - this £30 Billion a year drives their outrageous profit levels. The EU and Switzerland already stopped doing this - it makes no sense to continue and even less sense to continue and then moan they make too much money and then tax them more - which they moan about. Our Banks are on massive Benefits - let’s cut them and get our banks back to work. If they can get 4% for doing nothing, they need to be paid more when lending to us - we make a burden for ourselves with these payments for nothing. buff.ly/pi1ohJ7

So much for “Brexit will make food cheaper”. Food prices are now dramatically higher than five years ago. LSE researchers estimated Brexit food barriers cost households about £250 each by 2023. And now British food production is under pressure while imports and the food trade deficit rise. Cheaper food was one of the great Brexit promises. The reality has been the opposite.
🥩🥚 STEAK AND EGGS — NOW A LUXURY MEAL IN BRITAIN?! Food prices have surged 38.2% over the past five years. But look at some of the increases: 🔴 Beef and veal: +60.4% 🔴 Eggs: +56.1% 🔴 Lamb and goat: +55.0% 🔴 Pork: +51.8% 🔴 Olive oil: +109.7% A weekly food shop costing £60 in 2021 would now cost around £83. That's almost £1,200 EXTRA a year for the same groceries! I joined @MartinDaubney to discuss the impact of rising food prices on hardworking Brits. 💬 What's become too expensive for your weekly shop?

A clip from November 1993 Friday night The Word intro. Straight after Tory chancellor Kenneth Clarke had rebranded 'Unemployment Benefit' as 'Job Seekers Allowance' . After the crippling 2008 public bank bailouts - you’d think the banking lobby would choose its arguments more carefully. If banks warn that taxing their profits means less lending, that strengthens the case for a more diverse banking sector. Build on our mutuals. Create local savings banks modelled on Germany’s Sparkassen, alongside publicly owned national and regional investment banks. Give businesses more places to turn. We grant commercial banks the extraordinary power to create money through lending. That should come with responsibilities. So, perhaps sit this one out and take the hit - because you still owe us many times over.

I spoke about a windfall bank tax in my newspaper columns this week. My thoughts are that the big banks have been bailed out numerous times by taxpayers, & now they are back making huge profits; it's time for them to repay the debt to taxpayers, as winter approaches and help is needed with energy bills.

Carrington with its demoralised staff - with even those on minimum wage denied a free hot lunch - Ratcliffe worth 15 billion , Glazers worth 10 billion . 'We need to cut costs' who exactly is the 'we'.
🚨 | #mufc's dressing room feels there is a perceived LACK of leadership at Carrington. Senior players, in particular, feel let down by technical director Jason Wilcox's efforts during the summer transfer window. [@TheAthleticFC]

The average cost of a house in the Gainsborough parliamentary constituency is just £204,000. The upper capital limit after which you pay for all your care is just £23,000. Therefore typically if you have to spend 3 years in a care home costing £150,000 you will lose virtually all that you hoped to leave to your children. We need a lifetime cap on care costs (the policy of the last Government) or raising of the capital limit.

🚨 👏 Another huge brick falls out of the Brexit wall. The British Chambers of Commerce says repairing the economic damage from Brexit should be a top government priority. More than half of the businesses it surveys say the current UK-EU trading arrangement is not working for them. This is no longer about replaying 2016. It is about looking at the economy we actually have in 2026 and asking what arrangement gives British businesses the best chance to grow. Brexit is increasingly being judged by its results, not its promises.

Very interesting to see on SKY news the opinions of EU senior members who welcome us back to the EU if we can rejoin. I do hope our new PM progresses this . The quicker the better for SME's #JOINEU

Do you ever think any one with a strong Cockney, Liverpool, Birmingham, West Country accent could ever be Prime minister or even reading the national news or radio however intelligent they are? I think there is a bias against people with strong accents.
