Today, Sunday, October 11, 2026, marks Italy's inaugural National Day of Remembrance for the
Victims of the Arandora Star.
The date of October 11 was specifically chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the death of Rando Bertoia in 2013, a Glasgow-based Scots-Italian who
was the final living survivor of the 1940 maritime tragedy.
I interviewed Rando in 2006 for my book Missing Presumed Drowned. I have published the interview on YouTube along with the other interviews I did for the book.
Please take a moment to listen to his story, many thanks.

Accidentally drove through the express drop off at @Gatwick_Airport before parking in the short stay. I wonder what the short stay per minute will be?
The play Missing Presumed Drowned is now available on BBC Sounds. Thank you so much for all your support over the past few weeks.

Stefano Paolini's history of interned Italians inspires Radio 4 play | To air on the anniversary of wartime tragedy

I’m absolutely delighted to share that my book Missing Presumed Drowned has inspired a Radio 4 drama of the same name, which will be broadcast on 2nd July at 2:15pm.
I originally published the book in 2015, and last year I happened to give a copy to the right person.
What a lovely tribute to Rando Bertoia.

Today is 85 years since Italy’s declaration of War on Great Britain in The Second World War and below is a link to a book called Missing Presumed Drowned, which I published in 2015 describing the impact government security measures had on the Italian communities in Great Britain.
I started writing the book in 2004 and was fortunate enough to interview 20 people who were interned or the children of internees. I included their first-hand accounts in the audio book version.
Don’t worry if you don’t speak Italian as the interviews are in English in British regional accents. Thanks.
