We need better decentralized stablecoins. IMO three problems: 1. Ideally figure out an index to track that's better than USD price 2. Oracle design that's decentralized and is not capturable with a large pool of money 3. Solve the problem that staking yield is competition Tracking USD is fine short term, but imo part of the vision of nation state resilience should be independence even from that price ticker. On a 20 year timeline, well, what if it hyperinflates, even moderately? If you don't have (2), then you have to ensure cost of capture > protocol token market cap, which in turn implies protocol value extraction > discount rate, which is quite bad for users. This is a big part of why I constantly rail against financialized governance btw: it inherently has no defense/offense asymmetry, and so high levels of extraction are the only way to be stable. And, of course, it's a big part of why I refuse to give up on DAOs entirely. If you don't have (3), then again you have a few percent APY suboptimal return rates, which is quite bad. The possible paths to solving (3) [treat this as enumeration of the solution space, not endorsement] are basically: (i) reduce staking yield to like 0.2%, basically hobbyist level (ii) create a new category of staking which has yield almost as high as regular staking, but which does not have the same slashing risk (iii) figure out how to make slashable staking compatible with usability as collateral (does it mean that slashing risk somehow passes on to stablecoin and CDP holders, so both of those need to stake and trust the same delegate?) If you're going to try to reason through this in detail, remember that the "slashing risk" to guard against is *both* self-contradiction, *and* being on the wrong side of an inactivity leak, ie. engaging in a 51% censorship attack. In general, we think too much about the former and not enough about the latter. Also remember that a stablecoin cannot be secured with a fixed amount of ETH collateral; in the event of large drops you need to be able to handle rebalancing (though of course you could choose to partially drop this goal in a clever way, eg. if ETH price moves too much you stop earning staking yield until you take some other action)

Ethereum is not the world. Ethereum is an opinionated take on properties that we think should be available in the world for those who want or need them. We need to be okay with sticking hard to our principles and acknowledging the costs of that, and yes, sometimes being the unreasonable man fighting against the ways of the world. We are Linux, not Google. The alternative is that we become inevitably dragged into being "only epsilon more decentralized than the big corps" in an endless quest to win the competition for top dog, and we lose anyway, because the corps have 100x more money than we do. The most honorable slogans are those that explicitly acknowledge tradeoffs, and don't try to pretend you can wish them away. "Move fast and break things" is actually excellent in this regard, it was a deeply brave choice to openly acknowledge the tradeoff and not hide it. Even though, of course, there are a lot of downsides to that approach in many situations, and indeed, I am saying the exact opposite slogan: Ethereum doesn't break on you and we should be openly okay with the possibility that that means it is slower.

🚨 PSA: There is an ongoing issue with the Prysm consensus client on mainnet. If you are running Prysm, you will need to reconfigure your CL node as per the linked tweet. If you are running another client, you are not affected and no action is required.
🚨 We have identified the issue and have a quick workaround. All nodes should disable Prysm to unnecessarily generate old states to process outdated attestation. To do this, simply add the following flag to your beacon node. This flag works with v7.0.0 and you do not need to update the beacon node beyond adding this flag. No change is required for validator clients. "--disable-last-epoch-targets"

Yesterday Ethereum turned 10. Today, lean Ethereum is unveiled as a vision—and personal mission—for the next 10 years. We stand at the dawn of a new era. Millions of TPS. Quantum adversaries. How does Ethereum marry extreme performance with uncompromising security and decentralization? TLDR: next-generation cryptography is central to winning both offense and defense. Disclaimer: This is a Drake take™ aimed at a broad audience. A technical deep dive into hash-based post-quantum signatures and SNARKs will follow. A healthy diversity of views across Protocol, the EF, and the broader Ethereum community is expected and welcome. It strengthens us. defense—fort mode Ethereum is special. 100% uptime since genesis. Unrivaled client diversity. $130B in economic security (35.7M ETH staked × $3.7K)—maybe soon $1T. Ethereum is poised to become the bedrock of the internet of value, securing hundreds of trillions over decades, even centuries. Ethereum must survive anything: nation states, quantum computers. Whatever comes. Call it fort mode. If the internet is up, Ethereum is up. If the world is online, the world is onchain. offense—beast mode Ethereum is hungry. “Scale L1, scale blobs” is a strategic urgency inside the EF’s Protocol cluster. Expect low-hanging performance gains over the next 6–12 months. Longer term? Think gigagas L1, teragas L2. Call it beast mode. → 1 gigagas/sec on L1: 10K TPS, ambitious vertical scale → 1 teragas/sec on L2: 1M TPS, sprawling horizontal scale Scale vs decentralization? Why not both. The moon math we need is now tamed: → real-time zkVMs for lean execution → data availability sampling (DAS) for lean data A delicious cherry on top: full chain verification across every browser, wallet, phone. lean upgrades Lean Ethereum proposes bold upgrades across all three L1 sublayers: → lean consensus is beacon chain 2.0: hardened for ultimate security and decentralization, plus finality in seconds; formerly branded as “beam chain” → lean data is blobs 2.0: post-quantum blobs, plus granular blob sizing for a calldata-like developer experience → lean execution is EVM 2.0: a minimal, SNARK-friendly instruction set (possibly RISC-V; pronounced “risk five”), boosting performance while preserving EVM compatibility and its network effects The consensus layer (CL), data layer (DL), execution layer (EL) have each been reimagined from first principles. Together, they unlock fort mode and beast mode. The goal: performance abundance under the constraint of non-negotiable continuity, maximum hardness, and refreshing simplicity. lean cryptography Hash-based cryptography is emerging as the ideal foundation for lean Ethereum. It offers a compelling, unified answer to two megatrends reshaping the ecosystem: → the explosive rise of SNARKs → the looming quantum threat Imagine the leanest cryptographic brick—the hash function—singlehandedly powering L1: → CL: hash-based aggregate signatures upgrade BLS signatures → DL: hash-based DAS commitments upgrade KZG commitments → EL: hash-based real-time zkVMs upgrade EVM re-execution A cryptographic jewel in each of lean CL, lean DL, lean EL. lean craft Lean Ethereum is more than a blueprint for hardening and scaling Ethereum. More than just doubling down on security, decentralisation, and cutting-edge cryptography. It is an aesthetic. An art form. A craft. Think Jiro in Dreams of Sushi. When we can go the extra mile, we do. Minimalism. Modularity. Encapsulated complexity. Formal verification. Provable security. Provable optimality. These are subtle yet important technical considerations. Stay tuned for the post on post-quantum cryptography that will make them explicit. lean legacy After 10 fantastic years, lean Ethereum is a generational oath. To keep Ethereum online no matter what. To scale it without compromise. To make it worthy of those who come next. This is about legacy. We are builders, we are missionaries. We are Ethereum. I hope you join us.

One of Ethereum's biggest issues is that we often let the detractors/bears set our narratives for us and essentially alter perceptions around what the reality actually is. Take the recent narrative that Ethereum has somehow "pivoted" to scaling/improving the L1 when in reality, it's just a reprioritization of roadmap items *that already existed*. Here is Vitalik's roadmap diagram from November 2022 - I've circled in red a bunch of things (but not everything) that people think Ethereum has "pivoted" to even though this diagram was published 2.5 years ago. The main reason why L1 scale/improvement has taken center-stage now is because core developers have the breathing room to focus on it and a lot of the r&d from previous years (client optimizations being a major one) means the network is in a healthy position to scale the L1. From 2019-2024, core devs had a lot of other things in focus on: - Beacon Chain development and launch (2019/2020) alongside new CL clients built from scratch - A bunch of EL + CL forks with various EIPs attached - EIP-1559 went live August 2021 - The Merge was the focus from 2020-2022 and went live on September 15th, 2022 - Focus then shifted to staking withdrawals (live in April 2023) and blobs - Blobs then went live in March 2024 - Plus all of the r&d that happened on every other roadmap item during this time (rip EOF though) Don't call it a comeback for the Ethereum L1, it's been here for years.

GeoConfirmed UKR - Misinformation by President Trump. While we typically refrain from political commentary, President Donald Trump's recent statement regarding the war in Ukraine is so egregious that we feel compelled to respond. Several claims made by President Trump have already been debunked. We've included responses from Grok AI for each claim, demonstrating that even Grok refutes the misinformation spread by the president. In this thread, we will provide geolocated footage as a reminder to everyone that Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, marking the beginning of this war. 1) The United States has not spent $350 billion on this war, nor has it outspent Europe by $200 billion. In fact, European contributions have surpassed those of the US. Moreover, a significant portion of the American military aid (around 90% !) is spend in the US, reinvesting in the US economy. statista.com/statistics/1499… eeas.europa.eu/delegations/u… ifw-kiel.de/publications/new… csis.org/analysis/where-miss… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/9grtpN5K2…) 2) President Zelensky did not claim that half the American money sent to Ukraine is "missing". He stated that half of the promised funds had not been received, which is a crucial distinction. csis.org/analysis/where-miss… politifact.com/factchecks/20… edition.cnn.com/2025/02/19/p… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/x2J4XJgAu…) 3) Ukrainian constitution prohibits elections during wartime, a measure designed to protect the democratic process from foreign interference, particularly given Russia's known capabilities in this area... foreignpolicy.com/2023/07/11… edition.cnn.com/2024/03/30/e… united24media.com/war-in-ukr… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/iNgj4reyI…) 4) President Zelensky is not a dictator, as evidenced by Ukraine's constitutional framework and his commitment to holding elections once hostilities cease. In contrast, it's worth noting that President Putin consistently wins elections in Russia with implausibly high percentages of votes, with opposition that 'falls out of windows", is poisened or jailed, raising questions about the true nature of Russia's electoral process. europarl.europa.eu/doceo/doc… oscepa.org/en/news-a-media/p… osce.usmission.gov/on-the-ru… japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/0… bbc.com/news/world-europe-68… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/aK1JCZlsa…) 5) President Zelensky has a approval rate above 50% and not 4%. 4% is Russian disinformation. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/19/p… kiis.com.ua/?lang=eng&cat=re… euronews.com/2025/02/19/zele… abcnews.go.com/International… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/IHyHHTkKe…) 6) There was no NATO expansion to the East, as NATO itself cannot expand. Instead, democratic countries independently decide whether they want to become members of the alliance. The process of joining NATO is voluntary and involves multiple steps, including meeting specific requirements and completing a formal application process. The fact that many of Russia's former neighbors have chosen to seek NATO membership speaks volumes about their perception of Russia and their desire for collective security. The decision of these nations to pursue NATO membership reflects their sovereign right to determine their own foreign policy and security arrangements. It also indicates a preference for the stability and security guarantees that NATO membership offers, rather than remaining under Russian influence. Regarding the famous 'promise': Article 103 of the UN Charter establishes a clear hierarchy in international law. It states that obligations under the UN Charter prevail over obligations under any other international agreement in case of conflict. This supremacy extends beyond just treaties, as it is generally understood to also apply to customary international law. The hierarchy can be summarized as follows: 1) UN Charter obligations 2) Other treaties and customary international law 3) Non-treaty international texts 4) Political promises or commitments 5) Historical claims Russia's invasion of Ukraine clearly violates fundamental principles of the UN Charter, including the prohibition on the use of force against the territorial integrity of another state. Any attempts to justify this action based on lower-ranking considerations like political promises or historical claims are legally irrelevant. euvsdisinfo.eu/report/there-… nato.int/cps/ra/natohq/11520… iir.cz/lies-provocations-or-… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/fb5Fnn3Do… and xitter.cf/i/grok/share/NgIPkpYvJ… and xitter.cf/i/grok/share/NgIPkpYvJ…) 8) Who initiated this nearly three-year-long war? RUSSIA. As a platform that has analyzed over 50,000 frames/videos related to the conflict, we will remind the president ,with geolocated footage, who started this war: RUSSIA. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, despite repeatedly denying any plans for invasion in the preceding days. xitter.cf/Mike_Pence/status/1892… edition.cnn.com/2025/02/19/p… (Grok: xitter.cf/i/grok/share/m1W0ZufMq…) --- 24 FEB 2022 - Russian tanks crossing the border from Belarus into Ukraine in Senkivka. 52.106063, 31.780644 4Q4J+C7C Sen'kivka, Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine Sources: xitter.cf/Conflicts/status… 1/11

Fighting consumes energy and brings people to the breaking point. This is part of the condition of life. Do I feel good when I hear people from crypto twitter and VC firms telling me that PvP KOL degen casino that's money-losing for >99% of its own users is the best product market fit that crypto is going to get, and it's "condescending and elitist" to wish for something better? Or when people with no understanding of the ethereum foundation internals tell me exactly whom I should rip out of the organization and whom I should throw in, and on top of that expect it all to get done within 2 weeks? No, I do not feel good at all hearing these things. There are even times when they make me feel emotional desire to quit. But each time that happens, I always see a sign from the world, something that reminds me that we are fighting for something valuable, that is worth fighting for. If you look inside yourself, you will find things worth fighting for too. Don't cancel yourself. Become uncancellable. Milady

Replying to @VitalikButerin
One of @VitalikButerin's greatest traits is his approach to decision making. When an issue arises, he listens and gathers information, weighs it all and makes a decision when he believes that he has weighed most of the necessary data. Best path forward is to realize that he has heard all of us and things are in motion. Threats of harm or attempts at coersion are deeply distrubing and will be counterproductive. There are multiple threads in process in the EF, the EEA and Consensys that will reformat how Ethereum "goes-to-market" in the near term. And based on what I am seeing there will be so many high value initiatives that become public soonish, that your heads will spin. Best to keep them on your shoulders and not lose them before a surge begins. The leader is Vitalik. The ticker is ETH.

Ethereum L2s are about to hit a brick wall. 55% of all blob space is already consumed by just 2 chains. And at current growth rates, we're only months away from everything breaking. Here's what's happening 🧵

Why does this matter? I don't get it. Someone needs to investigate how Ethereum is the world. #Ethereum is #Ethereum and will always be. It has already escaped and we need to find it and learn from it

I strongly support @VitalikButerin's proposal to increase blob count, combined with EIP-7623. reduces worst-case block size and adds needed capacity for fast growing L2s. the growth is exponential! the @base team is contributing to unlock this — and we're ready to do more.
