1. Boy, Amazon is in a heap of trouble. Evidence made public today by California AG @AGRobBonta shows blatant price fixing. And there are so many examples. Here's Amazon scheming with a pet food supplier to get Chewy to raise its prices.

Yikes. Calls to mind the AT&T/Time Warner merger a court (and DOJ) cleared back in the 2010s: both anticompetitive and also value-destructive for the combined firm itself.

Today, the Trump regulators issued another report decrying the financial industry's practice of debanking, where someone's bank account is stripped from them. Ironically, they also shut down the agency that was in the middle of banning it.

1. In Phoenix, we teamed up with @LocalFirstAZ to bring independent business owners together with Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (@AZAGMayes) to talk about how corporate concentration is destroying their industries — and what states should do about it.
3. AG Mayes is taking on Amazon, Real Page, and others. At the event, she committed to convening a working group with @LocalFirstAZ to examine how large corporations use anti-competitive tactics to capture public contracts and shut out small businesses.

We're going to see more bankruptcies. We have a dangerous bubble, a business model that doesn't pencil, and a few giants like Google, Amazon, and Meta that are using massive excess profits from their monopoly businesses to fund dominance in AI.
"Character’s bankruptcy shows that the runway for second-tier players is over... Meta and Google... have been able to subsidize their AI products with revenue from their massive [monopoly] advertising businesses"

“There are fewer places where people regularly come together, fewer opportunities to take responsibility for something larger than ourselves, and fewer experiences of actually shaping what happens where they live.”
Kate Hess Pace has written an essential essay that asks: “What would it take to rebuild the conditions for people to participate in public life at all?”
Reviving democracy has to start locally — with the neighborhood associations, VFW halls, local newspapers, Main Street businesses, and other institutions where people come together, make decisions, and exercise real power over their communities.

This photo in the Obama museum says so much, if you know the context. It’s from the midst of the financial crisis. Elizabeth Warren is rightly outraged, Tim Geithner is smirking in the background, almost like The Joker.
Perfect, no notes.

Why are hotels so expensive? A new lawsuit alleges that travel website Expedia is rigging the entire market, exploiting its leverage over 80% of all online bookings to inflate hotel prices in every booking channel by 15-30%.
It's an economy-wide price fixing scheme, not unlike what Amazon does to retail. /

The things Sam Altman is trying to pin on open source models are EXACTLY the things we are at risk of NOW from his proprietary model and those of his competitor Anthropic. He is accusing his competitors of being the kind of threat he already is.
No, Mr. Altman. We won’t accept a severe AI cyberattack in exchange for “liberty.”
74% of the American people don’t trust Big Tech Oligarchs. And for good reason.
Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI, recently said: “There is a coming tidal wave of cybersecurity problems that are going to come from these open source [AI] models … We're going to, as a society, I think, have to just accept some fairly severe cyber incidents from open [AI] models, in exchange for the liberty that comes with that."
Mr. Altman: What do you mean by that?
Should we “accept” a global financial breakdown and massive economic pain if AI models hack into the international banking system?
Should we “accept” patients dying if hospitals are forced to shut down because AI models hack into the power grid causing massive blackouts?
Should we “accept” another Chernobyl if AI models hack into nuclear power plants?
No, Mr. Altman. The American people are not willing to accept disaster “in exchange for the liberty” of making Big Tech Oligarchs even richer and more powerful.
Let me be clear: The creators of any AI model — open-source or not — are not above the law.
If you and other Big Tech Oligarchs make products that commit crimes or disasters, we will hold you accountable for breaking the law — no matter how much wealth and power you have.
We must PAUSE advanced AI and permanently BAN artificial superintelligence before it is too late.

Living a moral life in an age of bullies requires collective action; it cannot be done alone. Each of us must organize and participate in a vast network of moral resistance. From this solidarity we will grow stronger. This is what our current moment requires.

The real threat from AI isn’t the technology. It’s the atrophying of government over decades: practiced helplessness, subservience to corporations, unwillingness to prosecute wealthy criminals, and a fear of making policy that has consequences. A crisis can force a shift. That needs to happen now.

Former FTC Chair Lina Khan is absolutely right.
We need to enforce existing laws on the books so AI companies and executives don’t continue to operate without accountability. Congress must also regulate AI just like we have historically done with other emerging industries.

This merger will stifle creativity, weaken free speech, and cost people their jobs -- it is a bad deal for this country and should never have been approved. This is an incredibly disappointing outcome for the hundreds of thousands of us who stood up to block it, but it's also not the end. This grassroots movement isn't going to fade away and neither is our resolve. This was never about just one merger: this was about fighting back against corrupt oligarch billionaires trampling the interests of everyday people to line their own pockets. We're still in that fight. Join us.
