I knew that the Anthropic S1 would have some goofy risk factors but this has to take the cake

The longer you do this job, the more you realize how much of finance is just everybody asking everybody else what they should think.

One of the benefits of the AI boom is that it gave us the word "slop." A perfect word, not only to describe the verbal garbage that AI generates, but that humans generate as well.

I was fortunate to have worked for @VicNiederhoffer in 2010/2011 and to have had him as my thesis advisor in grad school (paper on stat arb in ag futures based on cobweb theorem). I learned a lot from him about trading and life. Such a character. Endlessly curious. A genius if ever there was one. Sad to hear he is gone but glad I got to know him and that he shared so much with me and the world. Need some time to properly pay homage in writing. For now, RIP Vic.

Maximizing returns is easy to admire in hindsight. Surviving drawdowns is what matters in real time. A strategy with the highest CAGR can still be useless if you cannot stick with it when everything is falling apart. The best portfolio is not always the most aggressive one. It is the one you can keep trading when it matters most.

The motivation for the policy is not pragmatic. It's moral. And you can't quench moral anger with arguments focused entirely on practicality.

C. S. Lewis’s words, written 78 years ago, are as relevant today as ever.. Just replace “atomic bomb” with the society’s latest fears in this essay: “In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.” In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty. This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.” — “On Living in an Atomic Age” (1948)

Literally the Terminator plot. "Created to manage the military's Global Information Grid, Skynet becomes self-aware and views all humanity as a threat to its existence. On August 29, 1997, it initiates a nuclear holocaust known as "Judgment Day," wiping out billions of people."

@Citrini7 has me thinking about taxes on labour saving devices. His think piece has a proposed tax on AI. This is an old idea. Traditional European windmills were subject to paying tithes (a tenth of produce or profit) to the church, a rule formally established by Pope Celestine III in 1191 due to their role as revenue-generating, industrial structures.

During the 1980s, I would fax a daily investment note to trading desks across the City. One Tuesday my focus was on British Aerospace. Solid order book. Government backing. The sort of thing that made middle-aged fund managers feel virile. I wrote, with suitable gravitas: "We believe the company is undergoing a structural shift..." Unfortunately, the fax machine had been chewing paper all week and slight crease erased a single letter. "We believe the company is undergoing a structural shit…" was beamed to every trading desk in London. The phone began ringing. "Richard," said one broker, barely breathing. "Is that an official downgrade?" Another claimed it was "the most candid research note in the City". By close of day, British Aerospace had dropped two percent.
the internet could not replace fax machines from like 90% of medical institutions in 20 years but yeah I'm sure AI will replace all jobs in 5 months
