It was a great show!
A couple of musical legends on stage last night in Philadelphia. Willie Nelson and Neil Young are 93 and 80 years young respectively! Unbelievable! What a show!

1/7 We are one month away from the end of the federal fiscal year. Right now, the NSF is on track to issue about 4000 fewer (!!) awards in FY26 than it did back in FY21-FY24, and 2000 fewer than it did in FY25 (with government shutdowns and mass cutbacks in agency personnel).

“Among the most damaging positions taken by the Executive Branch is its inability or unwillingness to disburse research funds provided by Congress. Despite steady congressional appropriations, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has so far this year awarded 40% fewer grants than they had awarded this time in the last fiscal year. This is in defiance of a Congressional directive that explicitly forbids the NSF from dramatic reductions in funding1.” nature.com/articles/s41567-0…

Nothing says excitement more than the first days of classes. It's a cherished moment where you'll meet friends that you'll have for a lifetime, engage with courses that will challenge you, and an amazing environment (Cheesestakes, Eagles, Phlllies, Sixers) that will grow on you. The @mseatPenn welcomes the Class of 2030. Welcome Quakers!!!!!

Important publication alert! Our paper, Vapor-Phase Synthesis of Ti2CCl2 MXene, has been published in JACS. It reports on a scalable vapor-phase synthesis of Ti2CCl2 #MXene with extremely low defect density using abundant precursors. doi.org/10.1021/jacs.6c10774

Sunrise Energy Metals is delighted to announce the U.S. Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital has confirmed a conditional commitment of up to US$400 million in long-term debt financing to support the development of our 100%-owned Syerston Scandium Project. The @DeptofWar's Office of Strategic Capital develops and implements strategies and partnerships to accelerate and scale private investment in critical supply chain technologies needed for national security. Its conditional commitment to Sunrise underscores the increasing importance of securing a Western supply of scandium, and the strength of our Syerston Scandium Project. Scandium, a rare earth metal, is critical to numerous applications in defence, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence infrastructure and wireless spectrum technologies. Sunrise Energy Metals is developing the Syerston Scandium Project, the world’s largest and highest-grade scandium deposit. Syerston is set to become the first primary scandium mine rather than a by-product source. Our deposit holds over 32,000 tonnes of contained scandium in mineral resources: enough to meet global demand for many decades to come. The conditional commitment will also accelerate several aspects of the project: ● Sunrise will support the construction of scandium metal refining capacity in the United States, as well as associated modifications to the refinery to produce a range of chemical-grade scandium compounds. ● Enable Sunrise to preserve options to accelerate expansion of the project to c. 180tpa of scandium oxide capacity by bringing expansion capital forward into the initial development for utilities and civil infrastructure. ● Give Sunrise greater control over permitting timelines for power connection by bringing the cost of power generation for the mine and refinery into capital expenditure, rather than off-balance sheet financing via third parties. The origin or rap music! We sang this at my "corner" in sixth grade at the corner of 8th street and 9th avenue when I was a crossing guard.
“Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang was recorded 47 years ago today.

Great to see the United States extend its commitment to developing secure critical minerals supply chains from domestic or allied sources for its defense industry. On July 20, President Trump signed an executive order that will make it harder for U.S. defence contractors to obtain waivers to buy critical minerals and other materials from restricted foreign suppliers. The order, which goes into effect at the beginning of next year, requires companies seeking waivers to acquire sensitive materials from “non-allied foreign nations” to demonstrate thorough efforts to source materials from compliant countries or prove that no such material is available. Sunrise Energy Metals is developing the Syerston Scandium project in Australia to create a globally significant source of primary scandium in a Western-aligned nation. Scandium can be used to create exceptionally strong, lightweight and weldable alloys for aerospace and defence and the material is also key to emerging semiconductor, memory and next-generation communications technologies. China, currently the world’s largest scandium supplier, is among the “non-allied foreign nations” singled out in the U.S. executive order. That means U.S. defence contractors will face increased pressure next year to obtain scandium from a “compliant” alternative to China or explain why they cannot. Sunrise is pleased to see yet another indication that we chose the right moment to develop a major new source of scandium to meet global demand. Find out more about Sunrise and our Syerston Scandium Project sunriseem.com/ Read the Executive Order here: whitehouse.gov/presidential-… #criticalminerals #scandium #mining #usdefense #supplychain

The amount of basic research done in industry is nowhere near the amount done in universities. At various times, there have been industry labs that had fundamental research activities and have made important scientific contributions. Examples in information technology include Bell Labs, IBM Research, Xerox PARC, GE, Phillips, NEC, and several other. That disappeared in the 1990s. Microsoft Research picked up the torch in the 2000s, followed (to some extent) by Google and then Meta (for about a decade until recently). But their innovations almost always built on top of academic work, and certainly profited from the whole research ecosystem.

Interstellar travel may be one step closer. Researchers from @MEAM_Penn, @Penn_ESE, @Caltech and @UCLAengineering developed an ultra-thin light sail that could propel spacecraft using lasers. The breakthrough brings laser-driven space travel one step closer to reality. “Years ago, we were asking what these sails should look like,” says Igor Bargatin, Associate Professor in MEAM. “Now we’re actually building them.” bit.ly/4vThFLD

Engineers from Penn and @CUNY have achieved a breakthrough in guiding multiple streams of light through chip-based networks using topology, a branch of math known for equating shapes like donuts and mugs. Since topological properties remain the same even when objects are deformed, these light-based networks are extremely robust. “It’s like building a highway for light where even large potholes have no effect on traffic," says Liang Feng, Professor in @MSEatPenn and in @ESEatPenn. "It’s as if the defects simply aren’t there.” bit.ly/4uCzkrF
