Yakani condemns drone attack on civilians in Abyei
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, strongly condemned the Sudanese army’s drone attack on civilians at Amiet Market in the Abyei Administrative Area, describing it as a grave human rights violation.
Yakani said it was disturbing that innocent civilians were being attacked with drones amid political disagreements between Juba and Khartoum over Abyei’s status and ownership.
He called on Juba and Khartoum to avoid using attacks on civilians in Abyei as a strategy for resolving their political differences.

Mawien Mathiang’s Threats Against Political Detainee Advocates Spark Concerns Over Selective Justice in South Sudan
By Prof Jok Madut Jok
That Gen Mawien Mathiang, Mawien-Jiesh of Awan section has said what he has said, threatening to kill people who call for the release of political detainees, is a normal thing, both for South Sudan and for him as a person.
I have known him since I was a young lad, and he has always been a reckless person, a liar and a dull individual who says things he doesn’t even know. The problem is that there are three big issues about what he said:
1) He was speaking on behalf of Awan Pajök community, as the leader of that community, threatening other communities in their name.
2) He said that the other detainees, Kom Kom Geng and Achan Agoth, who got released from detention, were actually released because Awan community worked for their release.
This begs the question, so Awan community possesses powers that supersede the state to release some people from government custody and threaten other communities not to demand the release of their people?
3) When a young man, Daniel Kur Bol Kur, from Twic Mayardit, one of the communities Mawien was threatening, responded to Mawien, he was picked up by the authorities and was interrogated for making remarks condemning Gen Mawien.
In a normal country, it should have been Mawien to be questioned by the police for his incendiary remarks, not the person who condemned him.
The fact that Mawien is from Awan Chan, home of the President, and has not been questioned amplified the widespread suspicion throughout the country that the Awan people have Awanized the Republic on account that the President is from them, therefore they own the country.

Yakani urges conclusion of inter-party dialogue on election resolutions
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, has called for the urgent conclusion of the inter-party political dialogue on election resolutions.
Yakani said the prospects of holding elections were becoming increasingly uncertain because of what he described as a lack of political will and commitment among the leadership. He warned that time was running out for elections scheduled for December 2026 and said leaders needed to demonstrate serious commitment.
Yakani said the government’s best option for securing a technical rollover of the timeline was to engage the African Union C-5 Plus and seek a resolution on an elections task force comprising IGAD, the African Union and the United Nations.
