How are abundance, evenness and richness interrelated in biodiversity change comparisons across time and space? It's complicated. Our Concepts/Synthesis paper @ESAEcology is now typeset and Open Access.

Step 4: APPLY ANYWAY! With the confidence of a cis, het white dude.
I almost didn't apply for the job I have now because I assumed I wouldn't be competitive. Clearly I was wrong!

1/ This is big. @WHOSTP is calling on all federal research funding agencies to adopt #openaccess policies. If they already have OA policies, they must strengthen them to meet the new guidelines. I'll add some summary points in a thread below.
How is the Biden-Harris Admin working to ensure taxpayer-funded research data & publications advance innovation for ALL Americans?
Today, @WHOSTP is releasing new guidance to make this research immediately available to the public at no cost. Learn more⤵️ whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-upd…

Check our paper 👇 where we use rarefaction tools and data from @bioTIMEdb, PREDICTS, @USLTER, and other sources to show that changes in species richness, abundance, evenness are often decoupled, and that a full picture of ‘change’ requires a look at each underlying component.
In @ESAEcology's Concepts & Synthesis section:
Local biodiversity change reflects interactions among changing abundance, evenness, and richness

ALT Pathways of diversity change & relationships between component changes. Diversity change can be due to (a) more individuals, (b) changes to the species abundance distribution, or (c) changes in total abundance & the SAD resulting in positive relationships between ∆N, ∆Sn, ∆SPIE, & ∆S. If the signs of ∆N and ∆SPIE differ, their relationships with ∆S weaken & richness can (d) remain static, (e) decrease or (f) increase

It’s difficult to describe the meaning of a conference on data and analytics with 100% women speakers, panelists, sponsors. It moves me greatly. We do what we see. I wish every girl and young woman interested in data could be here. Thank you @DataConnectConf #DataConnect2022

Wondering about bias in community science data? Here is an example from St. Louis.
On the left is a Racial Dot Map, on the right are iNaturalist observations of squirrels.
Squirrels are abundant in the northern part of the city but there are no recorded observations.

Stop funding research
(the way you do)

I was just thinking about this today. My (covid delayed) 3rd (now 4th) year review is due next semester and I was really counting on the next few months to move some papers out the door. But my kids are back in virtual school again so. Can we talk abt Pandemic Tenure standards?

My workshop for honours students was centred around 6 questions students should ask themselves about their writing. I have backup resources for some of the but not all... would love it if you had suggestions of resources (reading/videos) that have helped your students... 🧵 1/n

Dear potential PIs,
Because we get the opportunity to accept and mentor up to a handful of students for graduate degrees per year, there is a right and wrong way to approach those applying to our labs. So here goes:

Coding is more about communicating than computing.
New data: the best predictor of how quickly people learned to code wasn't math or cognitive ability, but language aptitude.
Math skill was almost irrelevant. Coding is mastering a language, not numbers.
