An authorised FSP does not start with a product.
Under FAIS, and the direction of COFI, fair treatment is not a slogan. It is the outcome you should be able to see:
Clear information before you sign
Advice that fits your circumstances
Fees and conflicts disclosed
Products that do what was explained
No unreasonable barriers if you need to switch or complain
If a conversation jumps straight to “this policy / this fund,” pause.
Ask: what problem are we solving, over what time horizon, and what happens if life changes?
That is planning. The product comes last.
#FinancialPlanning #FSCA #COFI
#School #fees still land.
A will is not a cash-flow plan.
A #death benefit is not the same as money available in week 3.
The need was never more #lifecover .
The need was: can the survivor operate the household for 90 days without the person who ran the money??
Couple. One handles the finances. #Policies, #investments, #passwords, the “plan.”
The other knows the household runs. They don’t know the sequence.
When the 1st dies, the paperwork is correct. The #liquidity is late
Accounts are frozen longer than expected. The bond still debits
Client, 51. #Income solid. Cover “in place.” No review for seven years.
Then a #diagnosis. Income protection is there but the definition & waiting period were set for a different job and a different #lifestage.
7️⃣quiet years felt efficient.
1️⃣ claim year exposes the drift.
5️⃣A regulated process exists for a reason: so the recommendation can be explained, documented,& revisited when #life changes.
General information only. Not personal advice
3️⃣If those answers are vague, the product conversation is premature.
4️⃣Suitable #advice starts with the need, not the brochure.
That is not philosophy. It is conduct.
*Who depends on me, for how long, & for what amount?
*What already exists at work, & what disappears when I leave?
*What happens to the business or household if I am the one who cannot work?
*In #retirement, which rand is spent first & what #tax & liquidity follow?
.
“The conversation that should happen before any product”
1️⃣Most #financial #stress is not caused by bad products but by unanswered needs.
2️⃣Before any quote, these 5 questions change the outcome:
*What must keep being paid if my income stops for 6–12 months?
The right cover is the one that pays when your #risk shows up, under your definition of #disability or #illness, for your income.
If you cannot describe the claim path in one sentence, you do not have a plan. You have a debit order.
#Accident. Time off work. The client reaches for their #lifecover policy they remember paying years for.
What they needed was #incomeprotection with a defn that matched their #occupation, not a death benefit.
The need was never met. Cover is not the same as the right cover.
Whether the surviving spouse can still live in the same 🏠
A target age is not a plan.
A plan is a sequence: income sources, order of drawdown, tax, liquidity, &what “enough” means in a bad market year.
The need is not a higher balance.
The need was: what keeps the business alive long enough for the person to return or for a sale to be orderly?
If the business cannot survive the owner for one quarter, the family is underwriting a commercial risk they never agreed to.
bank still wants the instalment. The personal policy pays the family, not the payroll.
The need was never “more life cover.”
Owner-managed firm. Revenue depends on the founder’s relationships. The company has #shortterm cover on the premises and the vehicles. Personal #lifecover exists. Nothing links the two.
Founder is off for four months after surgery. Clients wait. Staff still need to be paid. The
School fees don’t halve
The bond doesn’t negotiate
The healthy partner is now carrying 2️⃣ roles and on1️⃣ income shock
The need was never more life cover.
The need was: what does this👨👩👧👦require if 1 engine fails for 18 months?
2️⃣ incomes is not the same as 1 resilient plan.
Both partners work. Combined income looks strong. 2️⃣ cars. Bond. 👫 in good school. Each has some cover “via work.” Neither has reviewed their policies in yes.
1️⃣ has a serious illness claim. Income 🔽. The other is still employed so the 🏠 feels “fine” on paper.
Except:
The need was never “a pension.”
The need was: what continues if the employment relationship ends?
Most people plan for the job they have. Very few plan for the day they don’t.
Thabo, 42. Senior manager. Good salary. Medical aid, group life, disability, pension, all through work. He tells himself: “I’m covered.”
Then the l🏭 restructures.
Pension stays Group life & disability left with the job. Medical aid & his bond don'tcare that the 🏭 package changed
