the photograph was dated tomorrow, and the dead man in it was still sending me emails.
i discovered it inside a sealed envelope delivered to my restoration studio in bruges. no return address. no letter. just one old black-and-white photograph, still smelling faintly of chemicals.
it showed a man lying beside a canal, one hand beneath his chest, a silver pocket watch resting near his face. reflected in the watch's glass was a woman standing behind the camera.
me.
i checked the date printed on the photograph: october 16, 2026. tomorrow.
the dead man was august de wilde, a retired photographer whose collection i'd been restoring for three months. that morning, he'd emailed me to ask whether his negatives were ready.
i called him. no answer.
then i noticed something strange in the photograph's lower corner: a tiny reflection of a blue door with a brass number seven.
i knew that door.
it belonged to the building where my younger brother had supposedly died six years earlier.
