3,600 Years Ago, the Egyptians talked about a dude who could reattach severed heads and restore animals to life. It's recorded in the ancient Egyptian Westcar Papyrus, a manuscript that survives to this day. The account describes a magician named Djedi, who was summoned before Pharaoh Khufu because of his extraordinary abilities. Khufu wanted a demonstration. He ordered a prisoner brought forward to be decapitated. Djedi refused to perform the experiment on a human being. Instead, they brought him a goose. The bird was decapitated. Its head was placed on one side of the hall and its body on the other. Djedi spoke a formula. According to the text, the severed head and body began moving toward one another. They reunited, and the goose stood up and made its normal call. Djedi reportedly repeated the demonstration with other animals, including a bull. So this is what's happening?!?! Complete separation of the head from the body. Independent movement of the severed parts. Physical reconnection. Restoration of normal biological function. And the man performing these acts was also said to possess knowledge associated with Thoth. I find that connection particularly interesting. The manuscript is a literary account, not proof that these events occurred. But I think we should be careful about dismissing the details simply because the Egyptians described the process as magic. We have an ancient author describing the restoration of life following an injury that should be irreversible, performed by someone possessing extraordinary knowledge unavailable even to the king. Was this entirely an invention meant to demonstrate the power of Egyptian priests? Was Djedi based on an actual individual whose abilities became exaggerated over generations? Or does the story preserve an older tradition that we no longer understand? The Egyptians were writing about things we still cannot accomplish today.
