Richard Menger, MD, MPA, is no stranger to making the case for neurosurgery beyond the operating room. A regular contributor to Forbes and other national outlets, he has written extensively about the policies shaping patient care, physician practice, and the future of medicine.
For #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth, Dr. Menger, a member of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee, takes us beyond the byline to share why he chose neurosurgery, why advocacy matters, and why protecting the physician-patient relationship remains at the heart of both.
Hear directly from one of neurosurgery's most outspoken physician advocates. 🧠🎥

The AANS and CNS weighed in on @CMSGov’s CY27 OPPS/ASC proposed rule, with a clear focus on protecting patient safety, access to care, and physicians' clinical judgment.
Our CY27 OPPS/ASC priorities:
→ Keep a clinically meaningful Inpatient Only list
→ End unnecessary prior authorization for cervical fusion & spinal neurostimulators
→ Ensure quality measures recognize appropriate care—not penalize it
→ Protect physician clinical judgment on where complex care is delivered
The right care. The right setting. The right time.

Every diagnosis begins with a person. Every procedure requires extraordinary precision. Every outcome has the power to change a life.
Today marks the start of #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth.
Throughout August, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons will celebrate this year's theme, Precision That Changes Lives, by sharing the stories, people and innovations that define one of medicine's most demanding specialties.
You'll go behind the scenes of neurosurgery to see the dedication, training and teamwork behind every operation. We'll highlight how new technologies and groundbreaking research are expanding what's possible for patients. We'll share stories of resilience, recovery and hope, while recognizing the neurosurgeons, care teams, researchers, educators and advocates working every day to advance neurological care.
Whether you've been touched by neurosurgery as a patient, caregiver, physician, trainee, industry partner or supporter, your voice is part of this story.
Join us throughout the month. Watch, learn, share and help shine a light on the expertise, compassion and innovation that change lives every day.
Visit the Neurosurgery Awareness Month hub to explore resources and learn how you can participate: aans.org/about/neurosurgery-…
To our neurosurgical community: We invite you to help tell the story of our specialty. Share your experiences, your patients' successes, your research, innovations, educational moments, advocacy efforts and the people who inspire you. Use #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth so we can celebrate your contributions and amplify the incredible work happening across the field. Together, we can help the world better understand the impact of neurosurgery.

A major step forward for healthcare providers and the patients we serve. Administrative burdens continue to drive physician burnout and stall timely medical interventions.

Same!
The AANS/CNS Washington Committee is buckling down to review all 1,592 pages of proposals — and, as always, there will likely be some good, some bad ... and some ugly.
But here's the big picture: another year brings another payment cut.
There is a growing disconnect between Washington's stated goals of improving access to care and increasing competition, and the reality facing physicians and patients on the ground.
Independent specialty practices are disappearing. Consolidation is accelerating. Patients are waiting longer for care. And the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule continues to move in one direction.
An aging America will require more specialty care, not less. A health system that celebrates prevention while simultaneously devaluing specialty care is heading toward a collision with demographic reality.
At some point, federal regulators (and policymakers) need to ask what future they're planning for, whether today's policies are helping us get there, and whether the tradeoffs are worth it.
Patients and the clinicians that serve them are living with the consequences of these choices. #FixMedicareNow

BREAKING: @CMSGov just proposed a 1.19% - 1.68% cut to physician reimbursement in the 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. At a time when costs are up on everything, physicians are asked to do more with less again. We're digging into the details, stay tuned. #FixMedicareNow

👏👏👏 @WaysandMeansGOP and @WaysMeansCmte for all their hard work and for advancing the Improving Seniors' Timely Access to Care Act with a unanimous 42-0 vote.
This bipartisan, bicameral legislation would modernize Medicare Advantage prior authorization, increase transparency, and improve timely access to medically necessary care for more than 35 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Advantage.
Special thanks to our legislative champions @MikeKellyPA, @RepDelBene, @RepJohnJoyce, and @RepBera for keeping the momentum going! Let's gooo!!!
