This is how you should think about the deficits that are undermining public transit agencies in the US. If there is fraud, prosecute. If there is waste, elect leaders committed to attacking it. But don't pretend that your transit will be better if it has less money.
When I post about Social Security running out of money in six years, many say we just need to cut waste, fraud, and abuse. We should. But that only addresses a small fraction of the shortfall. If your Congressman says that alone will fix Social Security, they aren't being straight with you. We need real solutions, not political talking points.

Glad to see MARTA chose buses with left side doors to future proof them for other BRT lines that may have median stations.
Nice! It looks like MARTA is testing out the new Bus Rapid Transit vehicles for the Summerhill line. Spotted this evening on Mitchell Street.

youtube.com/watch?v=PQmrPH5s… Perfect example of everything wrong with the public understanding of public transit (ie. wanting rail for the sake of the vehicle rather than prioritizing mobility)

What causal evidence do we have that shows purely the difference in mode, rail vs bus, leads to more development? How can we tell it's not that rapidly developing areas are better at attracting rail investment?

Not every US transit agency is shrinking!
Another win for bus riders. 🚍 Today, Miami-Dade restored $9.2 million to Metrobus service. That means 4,211 more riders will still have a bus home come March. So far this year, $21.5 million in cuts have been reversed.

In 35 years as a transit consultant I have seen very few cases where a monorail really is the right solution. This is not a bias against monorails. It is an ability to identify the goal before becoming fixated on a tool.
Your bias against monorails is deeply problematic

Way back in the day when I also used to make buildings for flight sims
I haven't had to make a building in awhile. When I used to work on a flight sim for the military I used to make low poly buildings all the time.

I see they are closing down Superior for this though its totally unwarranted ruining many bus rider's day. The hell is going on @DowntownCLE and not respecting public transit? These events aren't Winterfest, stop closing @CLEPublicSquare unnecessarily!
TONIGHT! Don’t miss the 2nd-to-last Public Square Concert Series performance, kicked off by Esther Fitz and headlined by Hubb’s Groove!🎶 Stop by the Square from 5-8 this evening on Wednesday, September 23rd, for free live music, food truck bites, & an outdoor bar. See ya there!

I'm getting tired of this. @DowntownCLE has been closing public square for the most mundane of circumstances like Yoga on the green then claiming it's for pedestrian safety which is silly considering it's literally only buses that go through Public Square that have stops.
Attention @GCRTA bus riders: The bus lanes through @CLEPublicSquare are and bus stops in the square are closed for an event and riders are reporting delays of up to 10 minutes.

US public transit advocates: Don't just envy Europe. Start by envying Canada. Find the Canadian city most comparable to yours and see what the Canadians do in a similar situation, with similar land use and economic history.
Replying to @humantransit
i always come back to this statistic about ridership in EDMONTON of all places. canada’s transit is completely on another level to 99% of us cities.

As elections approach, we’ll see ever more explicit messaging advocating the destruction of public transit across the US. This is the most compelling argument. Utterly wrong and loaded with questionable value judgments, but compelling to many people. 1/thread

Public transportation, as we have known it, is now on the edge of obsolescence. It only ever made sense in a few high volume routes in dense areas (NYC and similar). Autonomous vehicles will take you from point A to point B, using existing roads, and they are here now.

Great news, @GCRTA riders! The service cuts slated for December are officially postponed! 🎉 Let’s work together to ensure sure the cuts are stopped altogether, and that we will instead see service EXPANSION.
Hey riders, we heard you. 💙⁣ ⁣ Following feedback shared during our August public hearings, GCRTA General Manager & CEO India L. Birdsong Terry has decided to delay the proposed service reductions until May 2027.⁣ ⁣ Learn more: rideRTA.com/news/gcrta-decid… (1/3)

I have always viewed it as a class thing. Some of our peers believe riding the bus is only for poor people and that urbanist want rail not a bus. They dismiss Bus Rapid Transit too. Rail only smh
Is your city stuck on rail vs. bus debates? I just freshened up an old explainer on how to think through these emotional issues. It's in the first reply below. Please share!
