This is awesome!
Today, we announce Zcash JS, the ultimate JavaScript Swiss-knife for building anything with Zcash. This allows you to build a Zcash application for the web, server, or mobile, safely and securely, with top notch DX. What can you build with it? Anything, from wallets, light client, data dashboards, to anything that you can imagine. We are committed to actively maintaining it and building an ecosystem of toolings and libraries around it. Give it a try, links in the comment 👇

Agreed. Complexity is fragility. The core mission must stay simple: private money that scales.
This is a proposal, and proposals are welcome and should be surfaced and debated. Best ideas win. This one doesn’t have the broad support needed to make a consensus change. I also don’t believe it’s good for Zcash. Background: here is the initial rationale for considering a move to PoS by ECC back in 2021. zodl.com/should-zcash-switch… Crosslink (then TFL) was originally intended as a first step toward that transition. zodl.com/the-trailing-finali… When I returned to ECC as CEO, I stopped our work on it as I believed it was a distraction and wasn’t necessary for mass adoption. Shielded Labs then picked it up. Adding a staking layer adds protocol complexity and new security assumptions. The finality gain doesn't warrant the risk. Zcash should stay on Nakamoto consensus.

New on our Frontier Red Team blog: using Claude to formally verify software at large scale. Formal verification can prove that code is free of certain bugs, but historically it has only been feasible for small codebases (or required a lot of expert time). With AI models, however, this is beginning to change. In collaboration with @theoremlabs, we used Claude to prove security properties in over one hundred real-world open-source libraries over the span of a few weeks. NU7 is finally activating on Zcash! Zakura 1.7.0 activates it on height 3543405, which is the evening of November 5 for us Americans. Blocks will occur three times faster in Zcash. Other changes like NSM funding and retiring the Sprout pool appear in this upgrade as well.

This joker is a fraud. I hate this industry. So many zero sum. So many grifters. So many LARPers and mercenaries. So many grasping for power. So many self-seeking. Underneath the voices, there is something pure. Human agency. Best solution wins. It must. It will. Onward.
Rebrand Zcash to Ztracked.

Bitcoin's proof of work has done around 2^96 hashes over all time. Breaking the ZKP's in Zcash requires a minimum of 2^120 elliptic curve operations assuming ECDLP. If you had a dedicated ASIC, an elliptic curve addition would cost around 10-100x more than SHA2. So today breaking an Elliptic curve would cost around 1 billion Bitcoin-hashrate equivalents. AKA a billion times the hardware buildout of all Bitcoin mining ASICs, dedicated to break this. If a hypothetical billion X improvement came in, you'd need a chip buildout on the level of bitcoin mining before you can break anything. While competing against all the hyperscalars for fab-space. AKA plenty of warning time, for a recovery process that takes a couple day response time max.

Another fun fact: if AI breaks any piece of cryptography, its probably hashes before Eliptic curves or RSA. Again, its hard to asses AI risk, but you can and should asses the claims folks are making about cryptography. A lot of them are wrong.
Fun fact: Groth16 is less at risk from AI than STARKs. Now that I have your attention: We can’t, of course, assess the risk of AI breaking crypto, but we can assess everything else. And the landscape doesn’t look like what the hot takes imply. There are different kinds of cryptographic primitives. Hashes, public-key encryption/signatures, PRFs, etc. Short of P=NP type results, if AI breaks any/all of these, it won’t be all at once. Hashes are the black magic of cryptography. They take an arbitrary file/string and produce a collision-resistant fingerprint. We’ve had human-powered breaks of deployed hashes. MD2, MD5, SHA-1 have all been broken and protocols upgraded as we became less confident in those hashes. A break of SHA-256, SHA-3, or (for cryptocurrency) especially Poseidon wouldn’t be insanely out there. In contrast, RSA and elliptic curves, which underpin public-key encryption and digital signatures, have survived for decades. For symmetric key ciphers and PRFs built from them, it’s even better. DES was designed in the 1970s, and the practical attacks there are from brute forcing the keys. Ok, back to my admittedly clickbait assertion. STARKs, of course, are a type of “zero-knowledge” proof. In particular, a type of SNARK that uses hashes and error-correcting codes. Hashes show up both in the polynomial commitment, which is a Merkle tree, and in the Fiat-Shamir transform, which is used to generate random challenges for verification. Groth16, in contrast, depends on none of these. It’s elliptic curves, pairings, and some strong assumptions about how those work. And Groth16 proofs themselves are post-AI and post-quantum private, since Groth16 gives you at least statistical zero-knowledge, which does not rest on a computational assumption. In contrast, most deployed STARKs aren’t, in fact, zero-knowledge at all. They are only used for succinctness and do not give you privacy today, even without advances in AI or quantum. This is, allegedly, an easy fix (and the fix would give you PQ privacy too), but it hasn’t happened for the most part. Of course, this doesn’t matter much. In fact, if either elliptic curves or hashes were broken, most things you actually use, including applications using Groth16 or STARKs in cryptocurrency land, would have real problems. All most all applications in cryptocurrency and of zk proofs, depend on both assumptions, even if the proof itself does not. And if AI breaks part of crypto, we’d have even bigger problems for securing the internet, banking, and critical infrastructure using HTTPS/TLS and boring things like Active Directory and OAuth. So really, in a certain sense, this entire discussion is clickbait. But it’s interesting seeing people make just plain incorrect technical assertions about cryptography in the process of posting hot takes. As someone said, this entire topic of AI breaking crypto in cryptocurrency is a bit weird. It’s a bit like wanting a fallout bunker to survive global thermonuclear war. Everything is dead anyway.

In Jan there will be pq transparent. At any point in time, elliptic curves can be turned off if miners agree there is a credible threat. Quantum recoverability means that your funds are safe in ironwood and tachyon. Funds are provably accountable even if ecdlp is broken. There’s no one calling for an attack that cheaply and quickly breaks ecdlp. Anything will have a response time. Fast breakable ecdlp is going to be used for nation state surveillance above all. Meaning there is a response window for chains and users to upgrade.

So wallets must replay the entire chain themselves or trust an indexer, transaction shape still leaks metadata, paying fees ties you back to your public wallet, all as a side chain, no thanks :)
