01. Start with shorter books and build up your reading stamina. Possibly your ability to focus has been sapped by other media. Luckily, this is a problem with a simple solution. The more you read, the easier reading will become. 02. Carry a book with you. I find it very unsettling when I visit airports and everyone—babies, kids, parents—is glued to a screen. We spend a good chunk of our lives in DMV lines and sitting in diners. You can get a shocking amount of reading done in those spare moments. 03. Read before falling asleep. This is actually where I get most of my reading done. Resolve that for the next hour or however long, you’re not going to look at your phone. There’s something almost hypnotically soothing about reading in silence at the end of a day. 04. Reduce the level of non-book entertainments. This is the main reason most people struggle with reading, because we live in a world of infinite diversions. Harold Bloom said, “There are enormous obstacles to deep reading now. The tyranny of the visual is a frightening thing.” But once you realize those diversions are the very things keeping you from reading, it becomes easier to prioritize reading as a hobby. Books are both good for the brain (in the same way exercise is good for the body) and more emotionally rewarding than much of what we consume. 05. Keep a reading diary. It can be something as simple as jotting down the titles of every book you complete. Seeing those titles begin to add up is enormous fun, and will motivate you to want to keep reading. 06. Remember that reading is supposed to be fun. There’s a reason books were the chief entertainment for American pioneers and British coal-miners of the nineteenth century. We once had a massively literate working-class, and I believe we could revive a culture of reading for pleasure.

The #Spycops Inquiry has revealed many more police abuses than anticipated, but it is now under threat due to delays & spiralling costs caused by excessive police demands for secrecy. It is critical that the Inquiry continues & examines more recent abuses thejusticegap.com/the-uncert…

Worth noting that while Johnson and Hancock deservedly get much of the flak for this deadly failure, the minister who failed to protect the care sector was Helen Whately - who is now the Tory shadow minister pushing draconian benefit reforms
The Covid inquiry confirms that social care was an 'afterthought' for the government in the pandemic, as I and others claimed at the time. This symbolises how Westminster always sees it as a second-class public service of far less importance than the NHS. Utterly shameful.

Looking forward to this - 'For Emma' is one of the best books I've read in years
News: My new novel is being sent out to publishers by my agent this week. The Children is a dystopian fiction about a mother & daughter trapped in a "safe city" controlled by "Mama" - an AI system that rewards children for informing on adults. Will it be fiction in 5 years?

Argh. @BBCPolitics is running another "debate" about benefits & they're talking PIP again as if it's an out of work payment. If you got every person in receipt of PIP who is out of work into work it would save NOT A PENNY! Because you are entitled to PIP whether you work or not!

Language is not fundamental to human consciousness. In terms of evolution, it arrived only recently on our timeline. Consciousness evolved over millions of years through sensory awareness, emotion, and the embodied survival instincts of our tribal past; our capacity for empathic engagement and community. Syntactic language only emerged around 100,000 years ago. This is exactly why Large Language Models (LLMs - so called AI) are the wrong pathway to true artificial consciousness. They try to replicate the late-stage "output layer" of human intelligence without building the foundational, embodied awareness that actually generates it. Statistical text prediction is a mirror of thought, not the spine, the guts, the nerves and the subconscious, empathic ability to connect with other living beings. LLMs can never feel, let alone think. We have been sold a trick, not a pathway to superintelligence. LLMs are fraudulent. Their capabilities have already peaked and we are being sold lies about their future potential. Lies with the goal of companies reaching IPO and tricking investors out of hundreds of billion$.

The evolution of cinema, from Battleship Potemkin to Dune. Filmmakers have been paying homage to the Odessa Steps scene for nearly a century, from Hitchcock’s nods to Leslie Nielsen’s spoofs. The image of a bouncing baby carriage has become a lasting cinematic touchstone.

You’ll enjoy this thread 😀 What a character Audrey Daly was! (Senior Editor at Ladybird, 1970s - 1990s) In late retirement in a village in Fife, she stuck these notes on her window: (1/4)

Replying to @antrofrog_
This just stole art and also a character design from the studio Cartoon Saloon with the kid with the ice cream being a direct copy of Ben from Song of the Sea. Instead of being lazy and using a robot that's ruining our earth learn how to actually draw and animate. AI slop.

This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it late at nigh, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic. #Writing #Living #Creativity #RayBradbury #Book
