"Today we are announcing our biggest bet yet on our own silicon," said Satya Nadella.
From next year, Copilot and Teams will run predominantly on Microsoft-designed chips. The company's Maia family will scale to multi-gigawatt deployments and become its primary inference engine, while the new Maia 300 promises 40% more tokens per watt compared with GPU-based systems.
The metric matters. More output from every unit of power translates into lower running costs for every AI feature Microsoft sells. Scale remains the open question, with Microsoft negotiating TSMC capacity for more than 300,000 Maia 300 chips against rivals producing in the millions.
