In my village and most of the villages around, we had only one church, which was the Catholic Church. Everybody was Catholic. Not almost everybody. Everybody. People used to do traditional stuff and all of that, but they mostly did it secretly. You wouldn't just come out and see somebody dropping sacrifices on the road. Nothing like that. But yesterday, I decided to move around and visit places I used to go to, and I noticed that everywhere was smelly. You would look to one side and see a basket, a dead chicken, and other things. Look to the other side, and you would see meat. Everywhere was disgusting and dirty. Now, I understand when people say, "Go back to your ROOT. The white man gave us religion, and we have forgotten our own." But man, these things are dirty! This is what people call going back to our roots? I wouldn't want to go back to any root if the root is dirty, smelly, and makes no sense. Before, in my village, if you wanted to see such things, you had to travel far. These practices were mostly associated with places far from my village. Yesterday, I was shocked to see them almost everywhere. Now, dropping these things on the road has become a common practice. People step on them, get injured, and all sorts of things happen. You hear stories of people stepping on something and developing sores on their legs. What happened? Is this the going back to our roots that we know? It's not as if there is development. It's not as if everybody is now rich, doing well, feeding well, and looking good. People are still struggling. They don't have serious jobs, they haven't built houses, and many are still struggling to feed their families. So what is the essence of going back to the village? To make people scared of coming back? To drop things on the road in the name of sacrifices? Even the one that shocked me yesterday was when I went to visit my auntie. I saw someone killing chickens, using the blood to scatter everywhere, and burying things in the ground. Now, the particular person who had money to buy these chickens had children who came to my auntie's place to eat. He has money to buy chickens and other things for sacrifices, but he doesn't have money to feed his children properly. Is this the going back to our roots that people are really preaching about? Man, it makes no sense to me. If this is what going back to our roots means, I don't think I would advise anybody to go back to the village. Because what exactly are we going back for if the village has become a place that is disgusting and makes people uncomfortable? We need to have this conversation.
