How do emerging contaminants move between groundwater and surface water? 🌊🧪
In a recent study published in Hydrological Processes, researchers from the University of Iowa and the USGS deployed Solinst Model 615ML Multilevel Drive-Point Piezometers in Muddy Creek, Iowa, to investigate PFAS and pharmaceutical transport in the hyporheic zone.
Using custom 2-port and 4-port systems fitted with chemical-resistant HDPE tubing, the team successfully gathered depth-discrete samples along single vertical profiles in a challenging, flashy streambed environment.

Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) presents a major monitoring challenge: high hypolimnetic sulfide concentrations near the lake bottom. This environment demands specialized equipment. Researchers at KLL solved this by deploying a customized Solinst Eureka Manta Multiprobe combined with a Vertical Profiler (AutoReel). This system continuously profiles the 40m water column 5 times daily, transmitting high-resolution data in real-time.

Connecting with industry peers, sharing innovations, and discussing the future of groundwater management made the 9th Annual Western Groundwater Congress (GRA) in Palm Springs a great event!
One of the standout moments was the strong interest generated by the presentation: "Development of a fiber optic monitoring system to measure depth-specific earth compaction and hydraulic heads." Presented by Murray Einarson (Haley & Aldrich) alongside key collaboration from Ian Sharp (Solinst Flute), Thomas Coleman (Novara Sensing), and academic partners, this session highlighted a major advancement in addressing land subsidence.
Key insights from the presentation:
The Subsidence Challenge: Traditional surface-level measurement technologies like land surveying, extensometers, and InSAR track ground displacement, but they don't pinpoint where subsurface compaction happens or reveal vertical pore pressure distribution.
The Hybrid Solution: By pairing the Water Flute multilevel groundwater monitoring system with Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) and depth-specific pressure transducers, researchers can now continuously couple sensing cables to borehole walls while gathering discrete head measurements.
We are excited to see where this hybrid system goes next—including upcoming field trial installations! Add a comment if you would like to learn more.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Solinst booth, asked questions, and engaged with our team at the event!
