A lot of dystopiaslop (Hunger Games, Black Mirror, whatever we’re seeing here) assumes the market for the Watch The Poor Suffer show is the rich rather than the slightly-less-poor, but the rich prefer to entertain each other. Interestingly, The Long Walk got this right.

Exactly. Writing is math for words. There's building blocks, conventions, methodology, pedagogical strategies, etc. It has an entire system, and irrespective of your original language, you have to understand those things to be able to do it well and with minimal psychic damage.

Writing in general has always been perceived as “easier” because some people believe that being able to string together sentences is something that comes naturally to everyone, yet they fail to grasp that writing is a skill that *must* be built upon with practice

Part of what makes this and other examples of older syntax so compelling is that writers kept their sentences going, added modifying phrases that extended the comparison or the image. Today we end our sentences too early because we wrongly value brevity over complexity.
