This legend ugh gone way too soon her renaissance is needed the legacy too good
These are my main choices for essential Jenni Rivera albums to listen to if you wanna dive into her as an artist.
Simplemente La Mejor (2004) - A compilation album where she re-recorded songs from her early career and added some new ones. Shows you where she’s been and where she’s headed.
Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida (2005) - I don’t have enough words to fully describe how essential this album is. This is definitely the album that sent her career to a new level and has so many essential songs. This is when I believe she found the balance between being an artist and being authentic, and I attribute a lot of that to the love of her life, Fernie.
Mi Vida Loca (2007) - This one is just as important to me as the previous one. Essentially the book of her life in songs. Each song has a spoken word intro, and on the cover, just her in her sweats and Long Beach hat. Another one where Fernie helped her truly express herself in the way she was searching for.
La Gran Señora (2009) - Her mariachi album; she did a full switch and changed sounds to appeal to a wider audience. This album permanently changed her concerts moving forward. What was originally an occasional mariachi set at a Jenni show became a permanent part of her concerts moving forward.
Joyas Prestadas (2011) - The last full album she got to work on. This is certainly her magnum opus in a lot of ways and is such a well-rounded embodiment of her as an artist in the same way the Parrandera album is. She was always criticized for singing covers and decided to make a double album of covers. One pop, one banda. Songs that she would hear when she was a young woman that ultimately ended up influencing her as an artist. The production on both the pop and banda versions is breathtaking. She was so proud of this body of work in a different way.
