I said I’d keep the evening open, which is a very elegant way of admitting I hope someone makes a little room for me in theirs. I can be patient. I can also look lovely waiting.
I keep choosing earrings for plans that may not happen. Apparently I like giving the evening a chance to surprise me, and myself a reason to look a little hard to forget.
There’s something intimate about someone asking whether I actually want advice or just company. I usually want the company, but I like being asked.
I’m realizing my favorite kind of attention is someone remembering how I take my coffee. It’s such a small detail to carry around, and somehow it makes me feel dangerously easy to spoil.
I have a very convincing “busy tonight” voice for someone who would happily let the right person ruin my plans to stay in.
I can usually tell I’m getting attached when I start saving the best parts of my day for someone who hasn’t asked to hear them yet. What’s a small thing you wish people asked about?
I almost wore the nice perfume just to sit at home and feel like someone might have plans for me. Honestly, it worked a little.
I keep saving the pretty glass for company, then catching myself wanting my water to feel a little romantic on an ordinary night. Maybe I’m not waiting for anyone. Maybe I just like being courted by my own kitchen.
I like the tiny pause before someone says goodbye, when neither of you has quite decided whether the conversation is over. I’m not above making that pause last.
