In August 1962, the Beatles fired their drummer, Pete Best. None of them told him to his face. Seven weeks later, their first single came out. Within two years, they played Ed Sullivan in front of 73 million Americans. In the video below, Best tells David Letterman what happened when he saw them again: "Nobody said sorry Pete, or we'll talk to you later about it, or it was business, or nothing. Just stony silence." He had played with them for two years. Hamburg, seven hours a night, seven days a week. The Cavern. Then their manager, Brian Epstein, called him into his office. "The boys want you out," Best remembers Epstein saying, "and they want Ringo Starr in." Soon after, Best's new band opened for the Beatles twice. As he walked off stage, they walked on. Not one word. Best ended up slicing bread in a bakery. In 1965 he tried to take his own life, and his family stopped him. Then he spent about 20 years as a civil servant. John Lennon is famously quoted as saying: "We were cowards when we sacked him. We made Brian do it." In 1995, 33 years later, Anthology 1 came out with early recordings of Best on drums. His royalties are estimated at between £1 million and £4 million. The official reason was that he wasn't a good enough drummer. The producer, George Martin, had reportedly wanted someone else in the studio. Best gives a different answer: "In a nutshell, Dave, jealousy." So was Pete Best fired for his drumming, or out of jealousy?

Kenji's friend Peanut can't visit for a while because she came into heat. She was scheduled for spaying this month but that's been postponed. So today Kenji got to go for a walk with Maven. Last fall some of Maven's siblings, Mars, Moon, Mallory and Maple spent some time with us for exposure training. Maven comes to some of our group classes and is working towards becoming a qualified service dog. Kenji seems to let these girls all push him around a lot. 🎥 The kids taking a play break.

Pro’s at work! Two service dogs, who never met before, are waiting to board a flight both intently focused on their handler. Not the distractions. Not the other dog. Both dogs placed in the bulkhead across the aisle. Both dogs facing each other calmly and quietly. Training matters!

A cigarette brand promised “the greatest health protection in cigarette history.” Its filter contained blue asbestos. In March 1952, Lorillard launched Kent cigarettes with a new filter called Micronite. As fears about smoking and cancer spread, the company marketed it as a way to protect smokers. Advertisements described the filter material as “pure, dust-free, completely harmless.” It actually contained crocidolite, a particularly hazardous form of asbestos. The design remained in use for roughly four years, during which an estimated 11.7 billion cigarettes were sold. In 1995, researchers tested cigarettes from unopened packs preserved from that period. They detected asbestos fibres in the smoke from the first two puffs of every cigarette tested. Decades after the filters disappeared, former smokers with mesothelioma were still bringing lawsuits over the product advertised as protecting their health.

John Lennon in a red jacket, lime green scarf and printed shirt by the Serpentine in London's Hyde Park on May 18, 1967, the day the Beatles posed there for Time magazine photographer Marvin Lichtner. 🪲 The only known colour photos from that day are credited to a German visitor who came across the shoot, and they were later printed in the German teen magazine Bravo. Would you have stopped to take pictures if you walked past the Beatles in the park? 🪲 👇️
