Resilience and Mental Health🧵
The word resilience is increasingly used in Mental Health settings to describe an ability to recover quickly from adversity. The concept is problematic for several reasons.

Anyone who talks about autism like it’s a tragedy or an affliction should spend time with a child happy to stand indefinitely at the shoreline on a calm autumn evening in a perfect state of presence and connection to their surroundings
We do not choose to be well or ill,
When we are well, we help others who are ill,
When we are ill, others who are well help us.

I’m happy my tax money is used to provide financial support to those who are too unwell to work. I’m also more than happy to pay taxes on the premise that if I’m one of the unlucky ones who can’t work due to ill health I will be financially supported

I’ve just seen a mental health professional tweet that severe mental illness ‘doesn’t exist’ in a week when we have seen the absolute tragedy that mental illness can lead to for victims, families, and the patient themselves.
Health privilege truly is blind.
1. Provide these mental health services
2. Make them accessible and engaging
3. Maintain contact
Preventing homicide by people with schizophrenia means two things for services:
•maintain contact & treatment
•reduce alcohol/drugs
Our national case control study @NCISH_UK posted in response to today’s media coverage. First author @DrAliBaird.

Challenges:
1. These services are very vulnerable to cuts and underfunding in times of austerity.
2. Are often not very flexible (restricted hours) and may be seen as cold and standoffish.
3. Prone to breaking off contact and discharging once an appointment or two are missed.
