Suddenly our defence commentators/consultants remember “why military communications need sovereign control”. Because unless it happens to their most beloved and critical global cause, making these point is akin to blasphemy.
Ukraine’s Starlink troubles show why military communications need sovereign control. Watch consulting editor Swasti Rao @swasrao explain: youtu.be/E6xJqVWMe38

This is a very revealing post on process engineering rigour. Weapon design & manufacturing is no different. I can fully attest to a lot of the problems & solutions. Several years back (we were novices then) a senior officer put me on the backfoot with a question “if the Americans can make guns in their garage, how difficult can it be”. Now, Americans who make custom AR15’s in their garage just buy everything COTS. Barrel from one of the guys in Wisconsin or Iowa, trigger groups in a pack, carriers from one of 20 makers & then it’s assembled by hand in a couple of days. But that eco system which could produce as per standards took them many decades of physical experiments to build. If it’s not an AR15 based design, 💥 the supply chain is there but restricted. This is where process engg magic just dies. Making any product in India requires us to build the organizational machinery but also the memory that makes manufacturing learn and improve faster than anyone else. It’s not going to come because of AI or when somebody puts out a statement saying 100% ToT successful. Will hazard a forecast - all things considered, firms that don’t invest in process engg in defence hardware will no longer exist 10 years from now. They’ll be skinned alive by their foreign OEM partners. The user will bear the brunt of this in conflict
I've spent years in China building robots. I can tell you this playbook won't work: Pre-seed $: Invent the ultimate actuator. Seed $$: Figure out mass production. The hard part isn't inventing a beautiful topology. It's process engineering. The real delta between the US and China is the ability to execute the enormous amount of physical x mental work required to iterate thousands of times on product designs and manufacturing processes. Partly because much of the tacit knowledge / management systems has left the US, but also because of the sheer human labor required. This isn't something you can solve by buying traditional automation lines either. It requires: 1. Ideation driven by human intuition. Walking up and down the line, talking to assembly workers, and developing hypotheses about what and where improvements can be made. Raw human hours and attention spent understanding a specific manufacturing process. 2. Large batches of experiments across multiple variables. Coordinating experiments that can easily involve 50+ people, issuing instructions, and tracking the execution and results of each experiment. 3. Purpose-built test design to identify key metrics. For example, a change in gear hobbing profile might require accelerated aging tests on a dyno, while a change in bearing tolerance might require NVH testing. 4. Data + human intuition-driven analysis. Interpreting test results and deciding whether to implement a process change or run the next set of experiments. 5. Strict process control. Reissuing work instructions to the line and ensuring every process is followed to the letter. The best manufacturers in Asia, from Foxconn to TSMC, have built their competitive advantage on systematically turning thousands of physical experiments into better manufacturing processes. Their moat isn't just production scale. It's the organizational machinery that makes manufacturing learn and improve faster than anyone else. I don't think most people in SF clock this. Say you're manufacturing actuator gears in-house in the US. After you've made your first article, will you hire a team of 10 process engineers to coordinate the 50 technicians running concurrent experiments with designs, processes, and materials? To understand wear patterns across every pin in a cycloidal drive after 10,000 hours? To reduce backlash from 15 arcmin to 5, then to 1? Just to keep pace with China's progress over the next few years? Do you have the skill set and management systems in place to do this? That's why our approach isn't just to automate manufacturing. It's to automate the process of learning how to manufacture better. Automate simulation and design optimization. Automate assembly and physical testing. Automate the design and execution of process experiments. Feed real-world experimental data back into simulation to continuously improve sim-to-real accuracy. The goal is to turn what currently takes 50 engineers coordinating thousands of experiments into a closed-loop system that continuously learns and improves. Then the same robotic line mass-manufactures the product. PS: Coming back to actuator design, many actuator designs are already commoditized in China. The project in the video is open source, and CNC machining cost in China is just $27 (watch the video). I hope people understand this reality. I'll link more examples in the replies.

When Trump unleashed tariffs, China's most potent leverage wasnt any gee-whiz tech, but a bunch of minerals it digs out frm mother earth. Several of those India has, used to mine earlier and gave up in a queer fetish to garner Scandinavian socio-environmental acclaim.
If India were to cut down all its forests and extract every mineral beneath its land, it still would not be able to build an economy larger than China’s economy. Look at @TataSteelLtd. Even after operating for 119 years, it is still much smaller than @Starbucks. Tata Steel generates around $27 billion in annual revenue, while Starbucks generates around $37 billion. India must look beyond natural resources. The solution to building a bigger economy lies elsewhere, not in extracting minerals.

So you say increased surveillance plays a role, China dishes out belt treatment to those who don't follow rules. Yet if replicated here, you'll be the first to cry about human rights, dictatorship & conveniently blame it only on "caste" in India's case. Stellar journalism 👏
The always excellent @pallaviaiyar from Beijing, demolishing many comfortable myths Indians tells themselves. In India's case, the real evil is caste.

This tweet is from 2021. Gyanesh Kumar was never the agenda. He was just a convenient excuse. The real obsession was always regime change, as this “Cc: Indian Army” stunt makes painfully clear. When you can’t win people’s trust, you start dreaming up shortcuts to power. Shameful.

india’s problems are unique to her. india is not for beginners. we are the final boss. which makes it all the more fun to play. we are inventing a new playbook here. that is why we are going to need brave original thinking to solve our problems. these problems dont exist anywhere else. we cannot take pages out of how other countries did it. sometimes it will work, sometimes it will not. the only certainty is not giving up. pessimism and hoplessness from the people around doesn’t help, the least we should do is cheerlead. there is no room for sulking and sobing right now. the great lee kuan yew in one of his most fiery speeches said “this is about your life and mine”. paying taxes and thinking that’s enough, is to be in denial. it’s not enough, not YET. we're not there YET, and we are not getting to the promised land unless you and i do something beyond paying taxes. this really is about your life and mine.
I think what is actually needed is for Indian people to actually give a damn about their cities and fellow citizens. Anybody using the "I pay taxes, I shouldn't have to do anything" excuse should go live in another country. India isn't developed, it's developing, so it needs patriots, not parasites. If this triggers you, it means you're part of the problem. If you're not happy with the footpath (or a pothole, or anything else which is broken), fix it, or call someone to fix it, and don't give up until it's fixed. Be relentless. Be vocal. Be creative. Make it your mission to get that one thing fixed. Look at what Virendra (@Virendra0698) did by just calling the right people and being respectful (but also persistent). He and Arun Pai (@arunpaiblrwalks) along with the help of GBA and some wonderful volunteers turned an unofficial garbage dump into a pristine, beautiful footpath through sheer force of will. xitter.cf/Virendra0698/status/21…

Rotfl the comedy here! "Swadeshi" is Brazilian Swadeshi. That's a Taurus T9-8 carbine, Pure Brazilian Swadeshi steel, but screwdrivered in India by Jindal defense. And now we get to the cluster fuck that's Indian military procurement. The IA has ordered 550 units of the T9-8 at a per unit cost of ₹4,50,000! SSS make a 9m smg, the G72 that has a unit cost of ₹100,000. The nsg have ordered 500 units of this. And then you have the ARDE designed, Lokesh machines manufactured ASMI that's at 60,000 / unit. We have an order of another 570. In every way the Asmi and G72 are superior to the Taurus t9-8 but Jindal charges 4.5x the cost of a G72 and fully 8 times the cost of an Asmi. Now why we need this Brazilian import manufactured on "ToT" (only India will do tot for a technology that's been in existence since the 1960's) is something only the generals in procurement and the babus in MoD can answer

we transformed the most dirtiest garbage dump in bangalore to a footpath with the great tiranga flag and HAL tejas on the walls, in less than 10 days. a lot of you have asked to share what steps did we take to make this happen so @arunpaiblrwalks and i made a video about it. this was a joint effort between @GBA_office and civilians.

Astonishing post. Wants India to congratulate someone who has a long record of targeting India. Navi Pillay has regularly criticised India on human rights during her tenure as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2008–2014) She has attacked India on Kashmir and mass graves and disappearances, on AFSPA, on Sexual Violence and New Delhi gang rape(2012), calling for substantial legal and systemic reforms to tackle widespread sexual violence, and Caste and Gender Discrimination (2014) Throughout her tenure, she has has had policy frictions with India on human rights issues. India has officially responded to her attacks. She has also been a judge of the ICC which India does not recognise.. What is the case for congratulating her? Simply because she is of Indian origin?
It’s been six days since this remarkable woman of Indian origin (see her story, attached) won the #NobelPeacePrize. And the Government of India, her ancestral homeland, hasn’t so much as congratulated her?! Shame on the petty men who have made such a deplorable decision.

Swadeshi steel? It’s a 100% Brazilian product (Taurus T9) That it might have been assembled in India shows the utter farce Indian military leadership and bureaucrats have made of ‘atmanirbharat’ The elephant in the room is their own personnel have designed the ASMI 9mm and they already have the MP9 in service so yet ANOTHER splitting of requirements for no obvious reason….

Always begins with students wanting change but taken over by those who want trouble- whether Bangladesh, Nepal and now unleashing in several countries across Europe. Those in India finding inspiration from Bangladesh regime change must watch what the inspiration leads to.

This argument is extremely strong and not refutable. We have nukes, nuclear subs, ICBMs, space program but we struggle to build small fire arms, tanks, jets etc This is not possible. If someone can solve a differential equation, he must possess the capacity to do intermidiate level algebra/trigonometry as well. The only explanation is that these hard things were indigenised since importing it was out of question. And we 'struggle' with whatever was importable.
Simple, Indian Babus and netas would have never reformed if not for the 91 crisis. We developed nuke tech independently because no one would give it. The day our Govt /Babus realise no country will sell us engines, I can guarantee you, our own engine will be up and running within 3-4 years. But as long as Israel / France whatever will sell 90% of the product + Adani can just paint it a new colour, Kadi Ninda will happily pronounce it "Atmanirbhar".
