May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚
This month, we’re focusing on the power of community, connection, and compassion. Mental health impacts us all, and there’s no shame in asking for help—or in showing up for others.
We’ll be using this month to celebrate the many ways we can care for our mental health—through movement, connection, reflection, and support. Because taking care of your mind is just as important as your body.

Wednesday Spotlight: Casta 💙
Casta, a young parent, and her partner fell behind on rent after car troubles made it impossible for her partner to get to work—disrupting their only source of income.
Now that both are back to work and committed to catching up, our Caring Hands program provided short-term support, covering half of their current rent to help stabilize their housing.
Because the right support at the right time can help families move forward with dignity.

Wednesday Spotlight: Telesia
A walker isn’t just mobility—it’s independence. 💜
Telesia’s walker she picked up from a garage sale was a serious fall risk. Thanks to our Caring Hands in Health program, she now has a reliable rollator, giving her the stability and freedom she deserves.
In the last two years, we’ve provided $4,000 worth of brand new walkers to seniors who wouldn’t have had access otherwise. Because everyone deserves to move safely.

When Natividad’s relatives arrived from El Salvador expecting to work, a sudden job loss left six adults living in a one-bedroom apartment with just one income. A neighbor pointed her to our Food Farmacy—where fresh, healthy food became one less thing to worry about. 🥦🥕
In times of hardship, access to nutrition can mean the difference between staying afloat or falling behind. This March, we continue to celebrate Nutrition Month by honoring stories like hers—and recommitting to food access for all. 🩵

For Lilian and her three kids, our Food Farmacy has been a total game-changer!
"The food program has helped by providing the food we eat. I have been able to save money with the eggs, beans, rice, and vegetables I have received weekly. This has been a tremendous help and if we had to purchase the items, it would be a financial hurt. I am very happy with the program…it is a great help for my children and I."
This National Nutrition Month, we’re shining a light on food security—because no family should have to choose between a full plate and keeping the lights on. 💡💛
📢 Help us spread the word and support food access for all.

No one should have to skip a meal 🥕
Fresh food boxes through our Food Farmacy give families like Lissotho’s access to healthy ingredients for nutritious meals. We celebrate organizations like @Samaritan_House, who partner with SMCHF to help provide for so many families in San Mateo County—not just for #NutritionMonth, but every day!
"Thank you very much for the service you do for the community. When in need, I come to the community to ensure my family and I have food to last throughout the week. The food provided allows for me to prepare healthy meals and at times be creative with items I have never purchased before. I am currently struggling because everything is so expensive. But with programs like these, families like mine can do well without skipping a meal."
Everyone deserves a happy, healthy life 💙

Wednesday Spotlight: Meet Teresa 💙
After an accident left Teresa unable to work, putting food on the table became a daily struggle. As the primary provider for her family, the rising cost of living made it even harder to afford nutritious meals.
Vital resources like our Food Farmacy ensure Teresa and her family have access to fresh, healthy food each week—so they don’t have to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. Nutritious food is something every family deserves, and no one should face hunger alone.

Wednesday Spotlight: The Atkinson Foundation 💙
Since 1995, the Atkinson Foundation has been committed to supporting critical programs at San Mateo County Health. For the past three years, their generosity has helped fund the Keller Center, which provides compassionate, specialized care for victims of sexual assault in San Mateo County.
Their latest $15,000 grant will send Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) nurses for specialized training and support the HIV PEP program, which provides life-saving preventive treatment for patients at risk of HIV due to sexual assault. Just one example how SMCHF partners with our grantors to provide care and resources for patients at San Mateo Medical Center when they need it most.
Thank you, Atkinson Foundation, for your unwavering commitment to our community!

Wednesday Spotlight: Meet Tracy 💙
Tracy, who is currently unhoused, has been doing everything she can to improve her situation. After an emergency room visit left her with a $1,000 medical bill, she worked to get coverage—but the process took time, and her new plan wouldn’t cover past expenses. On top of that, she was struggling to afford food.
Through Caring Hands in Health, Tracy received the support she needed—her medical bill was covered, and she was provided with a $100 grocery store voucher to help her through this difficult time.
