Smart people who are forced to live in a society that doesn’t make sense often end up angry and chronically anxious if they don’t have the courage to move away before it’s too late.

If you’ve ever heard that
- The F-Word is an acronym for “Fornication Under Consent of the King”
- The Sh-Word is an acronym for “Ship High in Transit”
- Any other older word being an acronym
It’s untrue.
Acronyms are, by and large, a 20th-century phenomenon.

Rock bottom is not the end. It is the raw beginning of rebirth
The body breaks but the mind decides what lives or dies. No loss is final when a man chooses to rise.
Pain sharpens those who refuse to stay down

One way to understand your own condition is to write something and spend a long time revising it. In revising you teach yourself. You find your own information buried in your body. It is still alive until you are not.

"At times books you haven’t read shine more brightly than those you have, and often reading part of a book will shape your mind more decisively than reading all of it; there is no inherent epistemic superiority to having read a book or not having read it."

If we did not hold so much, I would not write.

ALT from “The Ghosts Poem” by Linda Gregg VIII. If we did not hold so much, I would not write. If it were not for memories, for the ghosts carrying the hundred clamoring moons, I would be safe. The forests keep saying I should not remember, but always there is the sound of their breathing. If it were all right just to love and die, I would not be in this empty place three stories up looking out on nothing I know. If I could bind my mouth or teach my heart despair of living, I would not be here learning what to say.

i think a workshop can be helpful and the disparaging of all mfa programs is its own cliché, but sometimes i feel that the best "advice" i can give a student is to write more. write a hundred poems. then write a hundred more. don't be precious about it. just fail, and try again

“Poetry’s about what can’t be said. And I think that language emerges out of what could not be said. Out of this desire to utter something, to express something inexpressible … the consonants are the attempts to break it, to control it, to do something with it.” - W.S. Merwin
