PSA: Cannabis Flower Chemistry
All (or nearly all) cannabis flower is Δ9-THCA... not THC.
THCA is the non-psychoactive acidic precursor.
When you heat it (smoke, vape, bake, etc.), it loses a CO₂ group and converts to psychoactive Δ9-THC.
That’s the real science:
Raw flower = mostly THCA
Heat = decarboxylation
Result = the THC that actually gets you high
A tiny bit of free THC can form during drying/curing, but the bulk conversion only happens with heat.
There is usually a small amount of already-decarboxylated Δ9-THC (typically 0.1–2% depending on drying/curing conditions and age). - Older or poorly stored flower can have more free THC.
This is why MOST flower can pass for the <0.3% Δ9-THC.
In 2017-2018 a bunch of uninformed politicians wrote a bill and voted it into law that no one understood. - A lot of us noticed their error around 2020.
