There was a guy I wanted to hire at Shell once. He had a solid resume, a great track record, and had spent his entire 10-year professional life with the same company. I asked him why he wanted to move from Chicago to California and leave his company. He told me just needed a new challenge, loves hydrogen, bla bla bla. I fell for it. Then, we offered him the job. He renegotiated the salary upward twice, I had to battle with HR to just give him what he wanted. Only for this guy to still turn us down. Later, I learned that he just wanted to leverage that offer letter to get a higher pay with his company. He had zero intentions of leaving. I’ve never felt more used. Sometimes when I think back on the incident, I don’t know whether to be mad or to be impressed in the spirit of 'hate the game, not the player.' The guy didn’t come from India to count bridges in America.
