CJ Baxter was the number one running back recruit in America. Then two years of his career disappeared. Today he scored twice at Kyle Field and Kentucky beat the ninth ranked team in the country, 31-21. Go back to Orlando. Baxter played at Edgewater High School and ran for 3,826 yards and 57 touchdowns. Five star. Rated the top running back prospect in the country. Everybody wanted him. Miami. Florida. UCF. Texas A&M wanted him too. In August 2022, he picked Texas. And as a freshman in 2023 he looked exactly like what he was supposed to be. Thirteen games, 138 carries, 659 yards, five touchdowns, plus 24 catches out of the backfield. Big 12 All-Freshman. Eighteen years old and already producing for a playoff program. Then came August 2024. Fall camp. Before the season even started. His knee went. Season-ending surgery. He played one game that entire year. One. He came back for 2025 ready to pick up where he left off, and pulled a hamstring in Week 3. Final line for that season: 54 carries, 196 yards. Add it up. Over two full seasons, the best high school running back in America carried the football 54 times. That is the part people do not understand about injuries. It is not one bad day. It is the season you lose, then the season you spend learning to trust the leg again, and by the end of it there is a freshman behind you who has never been hurt and the depth chart has quietly moved on without you. Here is how Baxter described that stretch, in his own words. "I genuinely believe when I went through that knee injury, I was Job. God did that for a reason." Job. A 21 year old reaching all the way back to the Book of Job to explain what happened to his knee. And then this. "There's nothing I can't go through that I can't overcome now." On December 8, 2025, he entered the transfer portal. On January 11, 2026, he committed to Kentucky. Kentucky had just hired Will Stein away from Oregon, where Stein had been running the offense. Stein is 36 years old. He grew up in Louisville, walked on as a quarterback at Louisville, and was coaching high school football in Texas as recently as 2019. Kentucky handed him the entire program on December 1, 2025, to replace Mark Stoops, who had been there thirteen years and was the longest tenured head coach in the SEC. What sold Baxter on Will Stein's program was not the stadium, though he had already been to Kroger Field the previous fall when Texas played there. It was that Kentucky put him through sports science and technology assessments he had never gotten in Austin. Somebody was finally treating his body like a problem worth solving instead of an inconvenience to wait out. Now understand where Kentucky was a week ago. They got beaten 45-17 by Alabama. At home. It was ugly and it was the kind of loss that makes people start asking whether the 36 year old was ready for this job. Then they flew to College Station. Kyle Field. Over 100,000 people. The ninth ranked team in America, coached by Mike Elko. A Texas A&M program that recruited CJ Baxter out of high school and got told no. Nineteen carries. 87 yards. Two touchdowns. One catch for 28 more. 115 all-purpose yards and two trips to the end zone in a 31-21 win over a top ten team on the road. It is not a 200 yard game. He is not all the way back to what he was at Edgewater. But he got in twice in the loudest building in Texas, in the first real healthy stretch he has had in two years, against a school that wanted him and could not get him. "There's nothing I can't go through that I can't overcome now." He said that before the season started. He was not talking about today. He might as well have been.
