Update! The owner of the cemetery is being status verified under the Trust to tell her family’s story with a Freedmen Historical Marker.
🚨Update on Thompson Chapel Protection Effort🚨
We received a response from the Fort Bend County Historical Commission.
No historical markers or state designations currently exist for Thompson Chapel—confirming the site remains unprotected.
They’ve now connected us to the cemetery committee and next steps for official designation.
Work continues.

On June 19, 1865, 2 years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay and announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in Texas were free by executive decree.
Juneteenth has always been more than a holiday. The day stands as a testament to and celebration of the unyielding spirit of a people.
