The @SacBeeEditBoard & our @mcclatchy colleagues endorsed Herb Morgan for state controller. Malia Cohen wouldn’t meet with us either sacbee.com/opinion/election-…
I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA). I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohen’s team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election. Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions. I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen. Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.

When @EytanWallace gets fired up watch out! If you can’t do an interview about your candidacy you shouldn’t be in office. Period.

.@FareedZakaria says California is a "case study in failed governance." He says Democrats have struggled to provide "public order" on a local level. Far too often, he says, they've prioritized the rights of the homeless over the rights of home owners. "The Democratic Party needs to think with it's head and not just with it's heart." So...why do Democrats keep winning? "What has happened with partisan alignment now is it's almost tribal." What can be done to break the cycle? Zakaria says San Francisco Mayor @DanielLurie is a "good example" of how to make government work more efficiently. The moderate Democrat with a business background has focused on improving public safety and economic revitilization. "You can tackle these in a way that's not inhumane but does solve the problem."

My latest column: Republicans are an endangered minority in California. So how does this right-wing lawmaker get so much done — & what might she be able to teach Dems in Congress about being legislatively effective in a hostile environment? sfchronicle.com/opinion/emil…

Murrieta GOP @SenatorSeyarto (R-Murrieta) and other @CASenReps blasted the Democratic supermajority and Democratic legislative leaders for negotiating the budget behind closed doors late at night without any Republican input. "It needs to be more inclusive because when you come out of budget negotiations and only one side is there really negotiating...that's not a budget that reflects the values of all of California," said Seyarto. "That's a budget that reflects the values of some, but not all," Seyarto continued. @AsmRepublicans have shared similar frustrations as well.
NOW: The CA State Senate Budget Committee is meeting to review the budget agreement reached between Democratic leaders in the State Assembly and Senate. Very brief notes of the budget agreement: $324.7 billion spending plan $12.3 billion solutions (includes dedications $13.2 billion reserves ***This still needs to be voted on by the full Assembly and Senate, and signed by the governor by June 15. Then, final negotiations are expected to take place between Democratic legislative leaders and the governor before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.

Regardless of how you feel about healthcare for undocumented—— CA Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire removed a fellow Democrat from a committee because the vote she would cast did not align with the outcome he apparently wants.
Democratic CA State Sen. Caroline Menjivar says she was removed from Budget Sub Committee bc she would not vote for budget w/ healthcare cuts. She has been outspoken opponent of cuts to state healthcare for undocumented people.

Despite being a major food producer, CA has the highest grocery prices in the country. And you can draw a straight line from our political leadership to the state’s affordability crisis.

CALeg’s Democratic leaders limited the amount of bills lawmakers could file this year so they would focus on the high cost of living. 6 months later—they don’t have a plan but still hundreds of proposed laws. Some warn costs would likely rise with so many proposals.

“At this time, we don't see anything that's going to move grocery prices in the right direction,” said Daniel Conway with the CA Grocers Association. As CALeg tries to tackle affordability, he says there are proposed state laws that will do the opposite. kcra.com/article/california-…

Here are all the votes for ABX2-1, which is the final why oil refineries are closing. Asm. Petrie-Norris can say whatever she wants, she and most CA Dems voted for this. NVRs are all Yes votes dodging accountability with voters.
