In 2000, neuroscientist Karim Nader made a groundbreaking discovery that changed the field forever. When a long-term memory is retrieved, he found, it temporarily becomes unstable, prone to revision or erasure. Now, Nader is facing his own cognitive decline. A recent pub from our lab on the autism risk gene SCN2A using brain organoids.
📢 New publication alert!
A recent study led by Dr. Jarryll Uy, a Postdoctoral Researcher in Dr. Karun Singh's lab @DKJEI_UHN, has uncovered an unexpected role for SCN2A, one of the strongest risk genes associated with autism, revealing that it begins shaping brain development much earlier than previously understood.
Using stem cell-derived brain organoids, researchers found that SCN2A is active during fetal development, where it helps determine the balance of different neuron types being produced.
