Thoughts are popping on my head regarding the CTFs, especially the impact of AIs. However, these are not specially bound to the AI usage - there was an upsetting moment in day 3 that I wouldn't publicly discuss. My opinion though - we should hack the challenges, not the rules.

Nevertheless, I respect the decision of the organizers, and I'm satisfied with the results. Huge thanks to the organizers, my teammates, and all the people that helped me in participating the competition!

My last CTF has come to an end. I’m very proud that our team, 0x4b52, finished in second place at DEF CON CTF. On the final day, I was a little upset—not only as a CTF player, but also as a professor. As a professor, I always want to tell my students that we should try to live and compete with integrity. As a CTF player, I deeply respect a community where each of us voluntarily chooses to uphold the spirit of the game. I believe we should hack systems, not the rules. Of course, I understand that not everyone may see things the same way. And to be fair, I probably didn’t think this way myself when I was younger. Maybe I’ve just gotten a little older and come to believe that this is the way things should be. Anyway, a huge thank you to BBB for organizing this competition. It is impossible to imagine how much time, effort, and volunteer work it takes to make an event like this possible. If I came across as too aggressive during the game, I’m really sorry. As a team leader, every single tick felt incredibly precious to me. Congratulations to Blue Water. They definitely outperformed us. Some of the team members are my old friends. I really want to congratulate them. Most of all, I’m grateful to my teammates and students. It was truly a pleasure playing together. I had a great time. Thank you, everyone.

Everyone wants to fuzz complex optimizations of WebAssembly compilers, but most approaches are simply considering grammars and types. Why can't we fuzz optimizations directly? We will share how we can do if we have systematically written optimization rules in S&P 2025 :)

Confirmed!! Seunghyun Lee (@0x10n) of KAIST Hacking Lab used a UAF to RCE in the renderer on both #Micosoft Edge and #Google Chrome. He earns $85,000 and 9 Master of Pwn points. That also puts us over $1,000,000 for the event! #Pwn2Own

Big change coming to @USENIXSecurity starting 2025. "Starting with USENIX Security '25, we will be decoupling paper publication from paper presentation, so not all papers will have full-length talk presentations at the conference." usenix.org/blog/2023-usenix-…

CVE-2023-38408: Remote Code Execution in OpenSSH's forwarded ssh-agent qualys.com/2023/07/19/cve-20…
🔥CVE-2023-38408: "Surprisingly, by chaining 4 common side effects of shared libs from official distribution packages, we were able to transform this very limited primitive (dlopen and dlclose of shared libraries from /usr/lib*) into a reliable, one-shot remote code execution"

This was exploited in the wild and is a Type Confusion vulnerability in Safari DFG JIT (CVE-2023-32439). This vulnerability causes type confusion because `EnumeratorNextUpdateIndexAndMode` and `HasIndexedProperty` are different DFG Nodes but share the same heap location kind.

I am happy to announce that "BaseComp: A Comparative Analysis for Integrity Protection in Cellular Baseband Software" is accepted to Usenix Security '23. This work is related to static analysis to find logical bugs in baseband firmware.

This is Huge. A UCLA student may have just found the first feasible Indistinguishability Obfuscation (iO) scheme, based on well-understood cryptographic theories. In other words, imagine an obfuscator/packer that is nearly as difficult to crack as AES. The research validates the creation of an (iO) scheme for all polynomial-size circuits (i.e. computer programs of a reasonable size) Malware and DRM could start to get really, really interesting in the next few years. escholarship.org/content/qt7…
