I wrote this piece about a young woman in my program who passed away when I was studying abroad in Spain. Thank you @gabriellen_vega for your help with it. Please share this article if you get something out of it.

i don’t want to be unkind but girl it is very very easy to tell which is which
These two passages depict the same subject matter in an identical style.
One is from Fifty Shades of Grey. The other is from Sally Rooney’s Normal People.
I bet you can't even tell which is which.
If we have the sensibility to dismiss one as a trashy romance novel, then why do we continue to celebrate the other as serious literature?

one of the biggest things reading does for you is teach you how much you lack, how dumb you are. the worst people online don’t read and so they are constantly convinced they are at the highest echelon of thought

Maya Angelou was assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend when she was seven. She told her brother, then her abuser was found beaten to death. So she became mute. She did not speak a word for five years, because she believed her words could kill a person.

Ryan Ruby on Rachel Cusk's Life of M:
"Although Cusk is a reliably effective technician, the book's primary value, like so many novels these days, is symptomatic rather than aesthetic."
