Business cards are completely dead, especially at technology conferences. Here’s what’s happening now when you meet someone new. Instead of exchanging cards, we’re sharing QR codes right from our phones. A quick scan, and you can directly add someone on LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, or, like in my case, straight to your phone’s contact list with all their accounts and details. But here’s the crucial part: right after you save the new contact, one of you sends a quick chat message, let’s say on WhatsApp, just a simple ‘Hi’. And then, you take a selfie together and post it in that chat. Why a selfie? It creates a clear timestamp and context of having met in the physical world, not just online. This helps you both remember the occasion and the person’s face. After this, you can detail whatever you discussed and proceed with your business dealings. Or, as sometimes happens, it might still end up leading to nothing. But this new process? It’s how connections are made today.
