Ron Gilbert, the creator of Monkey Island, is making Thimbleweed Park 2 without a traditional publisher. Gilbert said he was tired of the deals publishers were offering, in his view, developers could end up giving away a large part of their earnings while taking most of the risk. Instead, a rich fan of the first Thimbleweed Park offered to fund the sequel. Gilbert asked for a little over $1 million to make the game over two years, including enough money to properly pay the development team, the investor agreed. The game is now being self-published by the team and is planned for early 2028.
