Today marks 40 years since Samora Machel died in a plane crash in apartheid South Africa on 19 October 1986.
Mozambique’s first president was an unapologetic socialist who fought for more than a flag and an anthem. He wanted land for those who worked it, healthcare and education for all, and Africa’s wealth to serve Africans.
That vision and his support for liberation movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa made him an enemy of apartheid and western interests during the height of the Cold War.
But he didn't care. He wanted to be loved by the people of Mozambique not imperialists from Europe and North America and made himself clear: “If one day you hear the Europeans praise me, know that I have betrayed you.”
Suspicion surrounding his death has long centred on the apartheid regime, including allegations that a false navigational beacon diverted his aircraft.
Forty years later, the contrast in remembrance is striking. Mandela has a statue in Westminster. Machel remains far less recognised outside Africa.

"They're completely out of touch... F**k [Macron's] policies and the riot police too."
Protesters in Paris accused police of using excessive force to suppress mass outrage over rising living costs, fuel prices, and crumbling public services, after Saturday's national day of action brought more than half a million people into the streets across France, including 110,000 in the capital.
Organizers say the government's focus on property damage distracts from the economic crisis fueling the rebellion. They accused French authorities of pouring money into a militarized police response to the movement instead of caring for the country’s most vulnerable populations.
Students, trade unionists, and organizers from the Yellow Vest movement joined protests over the weekend, which saw riot police deploy tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators in Paris and other cities on Saturday.
Macron has blamed "far-left extremist groups" and "criminals" for the unrest. Lille and three other northern towns have imposed curfews.

Because we live in a completely disgusting and unjust world, half a million Palestinians in Gaza are about to lose monthly food assistance via the WFP due to a lack of funding, which makes Palestinian-run projects like this even more essential. Please please keep donating
Tomorrow, we will once again distribute meals to displaced people in Gaza.
The food will reach 150 of the poorest and most vulnerable families. Children deserve to have food to eat, just like children everywhere else in the world.
Your donations make a difference.
Please, contribute and help us make this possible: chuffed.org/project/172937-d…

Advocates for people with incarcerated family say prisons often cancel visits for what they deem is excessive contact with loved ones. “There are so many other experiences like that where just a simple hug or a peck is constituted as excessive contact.”

When the bulldozers sent by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to demolish book stalls set up by the CPI(M) were turned back by people’s resistance, the BJP took a leaf out of the Nazi playbook and sent in armed police personnel, along with BJP-RSS goons, to smash the book stalls. The priorities of the BJP government are evident when it deploys a huge police force to destroy books, while 19 people, including a child, lost their lives in Chorbagan due to the lack of adequate police arrangements to control crowds and ensure public safety.

Fighting antisemitism by insinuating that Jews own the banks
The vandalism and destruction at the Capital One branch on 86th Street is deeply disturbing and unacceptable.
I have been in contact with the NYPD regarding this incident and have urged an immediate investigation, including whether this is a potential antisemitic hate crime.
There is no place for hate, intimidation or violence in New York City.
