But Madrid were also excellent because they understood what kind of game Inter wanted and refused to play it on Inter’s terms. Every time Madrid recovered the ball, you felt something could happen. Vinicius running, Mbappe running, players arriving from midfield. Inter would attack Madrid for two minutes and suddenly Madrid needed about ten seconds to be at the other end. That’s what made the game beautiful. One team was trying to suffocate you with the ball. The other was waiting for the moment you gave them somewhere to run. And both defences deserve enormous credit. Inter created pressure that would make most teams lose their organisation. Madrid didn’t. Then Madrid attacked with frightening speed and somehow Inter kept recovering and making tackles. It wasn’t one team attacking and another surviving. Both teams were asking completely different questions of each other all night. Honestly, since PSG-Bayern last season, I can’t remember enjoying a Champions League game this much. Sometimes people think entertainment means both teams forgetting how to defend and finishing 5-4. No. Give me two very good teams attacking properly, defending properly, and trying to beat each other in completely different ways. That’s cinema.”
