I've been checking out @simuldocs for version controlling Word manuscripts. Impressed so far, as updates occur automatically as you progress with your document. No need to fiddle around with any code or interfaces, you just keep working in Word as per usual
My naming convention for paper drafts I send to coauthors:
Branch etal 2019 v1.docx
Comments with track changes, append author initials
Branch etal 2019 v1 MM CCM.docx
Send next version back
Branch etal 2019 v2.docx
Never include "final", "draft" etc.
