🧵Zelensky being publicly berated by US president and VP (a mass media spectacle par excellence) has left western Europe stunned, shocked, and floundering. There was much ‘unprecedented’ about the spectacle but I want to talk about something that isn’t being discussed.

New paper: "How much growth is required to achieve good lives for all?"
Is it possible to realise this vision without exacerbating ecological breakdown? Yes! But it requires a totally different approach to the question of growth and development. 🧵

About ten years ago a fellow keynote speaker at a conference suggested I read Two Cheers for Anarchism. It was one of several threads leading to my PhD and along with Weapons of the Weak and others influences the work I do today.
James C. Scott was enormously important to me. Weapons of the Weak and Seeing Like a State are both in my top 20. I had a lovely chat about anarchism over dinner at @TrinityCollege T nice pun a time. He will be misses

Better economic modelling needed in the public domain to show relationships between fossil fuel net revenues to govt and social spending. Pervasive belief that mining affords NDIS
What I love about this is the non-binary approach - it’s both markets and government working to create value for everyone
This 👇is what Australia should have done and should be doing right now.@AlboMP,@MadeleineMHKing,@JEChalmers. Let’s be more like Norway and a lot less like the US. The country will be better for it.@DaviPocock, @AustralianLabor

It's long been a question: could all of humanity actually live within the Doughnut? Thanks to Hauke Schlesier et al it's just been quantified for the 1st time. And the answer is probably yes - if we transform to economies of sufficiency. Read more here: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Very interesting article by @chakrabortty in @guardian about #Shildon, an old mining town starved of investment since 1951 but that survives against all odds.

It is therefore surprising that comparative analyses of how and to what extent differences in both interpersonal and interterritorial inequality drive anti-sytem voting remain rare.

Hype around AI in medicine often ignores two key risks:
- patterns of automation contribute to centralization of power
- medical knowledge is limited by the systemic refusal to trust patient expertise 1/
