I built a game we grew up playing in Nigeria.
Small pitch, tiny posts, no keeper. Just dribbling, passing, shooting and trying not to get cooked.
Plays in your browser, no download.

A 494M language model wrote this as a Yoruba news headline:
"Ije Oke Ikan Igbesi Naijiria: Reindeer Lowryi Dei Ijọ Irakoyi Nai"
That is not Yoruba. It is not any language.
The metric scored it 0.69 out of 1.
Thread on what I found 🧵
Now the part that matters.
BERTScore rated that gibberish headline 0.69.
It rated my trained model 0.73.
The whole range, from not a language to properly trained, is 0.08.
Half the official score is close to a constant for producing text of roughly the right length.
If the metrics we use to evaluate African language generation cannot separate good from mediocre, we are ranking systems on something other than what we think.
