"Reform's alternative budget released today includes many proposals that will finally get Britain's economy growing again. Abolishing the Energy Profits Levy will play a crucial role in ensuring the country's energy security, which a recent ASI index ranked below Romania and Ukraine. Windfall taxes undermine the incentive on firms to be ready to drill when prices are high: without them, the UK's domestic energy supply will be far more secure, and the country will be less vulnerable to price hikes and energy crises. It will also lower electricity costs at a time of eye-wateringly high energy prices, which will cost the average family an extra £206 in the coming year. The alternative budget's proposals will also give a desperately needed boost to housebuilding. Leaving the Aarhus convention, which paralyses planning reviews and raises costs for developers, will make it easier and faster to build new homes. Repealing Biodiversity Net Gain rules will also reduce costs and delays for housebuilders, 94% of which have been hit by delays due to the rule. Taken together, these changes will mean more houses are built faster and for a lower cost - which will go a long way to solving Britain's housing crisis. If done right, planning deregulation like those proposed by this alternative budget could single-handedly raise long-run GDP by 7.05% - a rise of almost £3,000 per person." - Silvia Andreoletti, Head of Communications

The full policy paper is striking - non-pension welfare spending will hit £160 billion by 2030, over twice what it was in 2019, unless someone puts in place some manor spending cuts.
These measures will unleash Britain’s potential, remove the barriers to growth, create new jobs and get our economy moving again. 🇬🇧

How much will the budget really change? We found that the average family will pay over £200 more next year in energy bills and £113 in groceries, and their mortgage payment will rise by £137 a month. Read about it in this @Telegraph piece this morning: telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

From @ONS: Construction output has fallen for the fourth consecutive month, with private housebuilding down 3.2%. 📉 Growth since 2019 has been just 0.2%. From runways to homes, our absurdly complex, distortionary planning system means little more gets built in Britain today.

Two weeks on from the release of Parish the Thought, a look back on its media hits… While others talk of devolution, we’re putting it in practice: the paper made its way far beyond SW1, receiving coverage in local papers from Lincolnshire to Nottinghamshire and beyond. @TheSun, the @Daily_Express, and @GBNEWS all covered its findings, while the paper’s author @JC_Hodgkinson made a valiant case for parish council tax reform in @TheCriticMag and George Killeen argued for it on @CapX.

The Tories’ recent proposal to cut welfare doesn’t go nearly far enough. It will save £500m compared to a yearly cost of £150 BILLION - less than 0.5%. Instead of punishing those on benefits (and the businesses around them), we should make it easier to re-enter the workplace.
'My only worry with this cut is it doesn't go far enough.' Silvia Andreoletti of the Adam Smith Institute reacts to Conservative Party plans to block long-term benefits claimants spending their benefits on alcohol, cigarettes and gambling.

London’s rivals are Dubai and Singapore, not Manchester and Birmingham. I take aim at "Manchesterism" and the ridiculous claim that a third Heathrow runway will "siphon investment from the North." London doesn’t thrive at the expense of other British cities!

Labour is borrowing billions more money every month than it brings in. But we also have to pay interest on that huge debt pile. That's money that we can't spend on defence or the NHS. Since the election Labour have spent £200 billion JUST on debt interest payments! (🔊 on)
