I was reading some books on African Colonialism published in the late 1800s. They were fascinating. Chiefly for showing me how nothing has changed.
There was one instance were the "liberals of London" were decrying Colonial Police for shooting a "defenceless native" with one MP responding that, "The bleeding hearts conveniently leave out the fact that the "defenceless native" had previously murdered a dozen women and children from rival tribes."

Tears in my eyes as I watch today's events in France. History is unfolding before us and please, pleade @SkyNews spare us your 1960s polytechnic conclusion that "inequality" is the root cause. Undoubtedly it's onecause but this is so much more than a socioeconomic phenomenon. There's nihilism, atomisation, political extremism, cultural relativism and, I absolutely believe, a spiritual darkness too. Pray for France. Pray, pray, pray.

Then Rome fell.
If you're going to attempt to persuade citizens to fight for their nation, you must first ensure that you have established among them a shared national story and the highest levels of social solidarity, trust and cohesion. If you've spent several decades eroding those things, you'll find you're left with a citizenry which feels it has little to fight for. That's basically the difference between Britain in the 20th and 21st centuries.
