This is genuinely disappointing...
Google just led a $20m round into a complete rip-off of my startup, Fastlane. (skip to 55 seconds to skip context) This isn’t something I’d normally talk about, but a line has been crossed. This disgusting and egregious behavior honestly makes me sick. Fortunately, there is nothing anyone could do to stop us from winning. Especially not some unimaginative NPC’s. Good luck fellas.

The post claims Google led a $20M round into a real "Relay" rip-off of Fastlane, but no such funding or scaled competitor exists; it amplifies unverified hype for a basic tool contradicted by its site and community notes. relaystudio.ai x.com/klashsarma/sta… doomers.ai/launches/relay

BeReal sold for $500,000,000. I think I can beat that. Not because I’m a Harvard dropout. Not because I’m a wildly successful ex-consumer founder. But because for the last 10 months, I’ve been taking one huge bet: People want to see more of their actual friends online again. Instagram and TikTok have become slaves to the algorithm. You open them to see people you know, and instead you get fed strangers, creators, brands, ads, and whatever the machine thinks will keep you scrolling. That shift built massive businesses. But it also stripped away what social media originally was: A way to stay close to friends, family, and people you actually care about. A lot of people have noticed this and said things like: “The next billion-dollar consumer app will bring back chronological feeds focused on friends.” But I think that misses the point. People don’t just want a different feed. They want a reason to come back to their friends every day. BeReal was category-defining. It proved that people wanted something less polished, less performative, and more real. But it also became stale. The novelty wore off because the core loop was too thin. It created a moment, but not a durable daily ritual. That’s the bet we’re making with Vlogit. Every day, one person in your friend group gets picked to vlog their day. Not for clout. Not for strangers. Not for the algorithm. For their friends. Over the last 10 months, I’ve been building @officialvlogit and posting the journey on Instagram and TikTok. That alone has grown to 260k+ followers and 63k people on our waitlist. Then we launched. In the first two weeks, 30k+ people signed up, and we’ve hit 16k DAUs. But the thing that matters most is what users keep telling us: They feel more connected to their friends. They’re keeping up with people they usually don’t talk to. They’re opening the app because they actually care who posted. We’re still early. There’s a lot to figure out. Retention, group dynamics, creation friction, keeping it fresh, all of it matters. But I’m more convinced than ever that the next big consumer social app won’t be built around more content. It’ll be built around more connection. And I think Vlogit can be that. I’m spending the next few weeks attacking this behavior shift as hard as possible: Refining the product, learning what brings people back to their friends, and building toward what I believe is the next category-defining wave in consumer social. If you’re obsessed with consumer social, friend networks, or building products people actually come back to because they care: I’d love to talk. DM’s are open!

YC rejected us at $1m ARR. When we applied, we had $170k ARR. At our interview in SF, we had $700k ARR. But… still rejected. How did we react? We continued to cook, and hit $1m ARR a few days later. If we gave a single fuck about a rejection, we’d be nowhere. Keep going 🫡

I've got an agent in a loop optimizing a renderer with the goal to minimize frame times (and tests to measure). It got times down from 88ms to 2ms and allocations down from ~150K to 500. Sounds good, right? Wrong. This is exactly why agent psychosis is a big fucking problem. As an experiment, I rewrote the Ghostty core render state in Go, with access to identically laid out data structures as Ghostty and the exact same validation tests. I made a purposely naive renderer (simple, correct, but slow). 88ms per frame with 150,000 allocations (horrendous, lol)! I then kickstarted a Ralph loop to bring the frame times down. I told it it can't modify input data structures or the public API or tests (they're correct), but it can do anything else it wants. It got to work. It has worked for about 4 hours. I've spent around $350 on this experiment so far. The results? 88ms => 1.5ms 150K allocs => ~500 allocs Incredible right? Nope. My hand-written renderer I ported has frame times (same benchmark) of ~20us (0.020ms) and 0 allocations in the update path. This is the problem with psychosis and lacking systems understanding. If you don't understand the system, you're going to accept that this is an incredible result. If you understand the system, you'll see better solutions immediately and can do roughly 75x better on throughput. The people who blindly trust agent output are in the former camp. They're sheeple, overdrinking from a fountain of mediocrity. Standard disclaimer: I use AI all the time. I like AI. The point I'm making is to not blindly accept results. Think. Analyze. Learn.
