I’m angry about the air in Singapore. It is not an act of nature. It is intentional. Indonesian palm oil exports to the EU have surged this year due to implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation. The Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) will be signed soon and enter into force next year, dropping EU import tariffs on palm oil to zero. Business is booming. Indonesian farmers are clearing land this year to capitalise on the growth opportunity. More than El Niño is responsible for the choking haze blanketing Singapore. Trade policy and poor governance plays a big role.
