CFB Wainwright explosion update (all info from news sources) -
- At approximately 4:00 PM local time on Saturday, October 17, 2026, troops were conducting a live-fire exercise within the training area of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright. During the drill, military munitions reportedly. accidentally struck a natural gas pipeline or gas well on the base premises. This immediately triggered a massive gas explosion and an intense, fast-spreading wildfire fueled by fierce local winds.
- Latest figures 7 dead, 25 critical, 150 injured, 25 missing...from a local source on base.
- The bright lights seen in the night sky video below were illumination flares dropped by military aircraft to light up the ground for the massive emergency response below.
- (Unconfirmed) more than a dozen Royal Canadian Air Force personnel physically parachuted out of the aircraft and landed near the local high school football field.
- If accurate, the high school field sits directly across the street from the Wainwright Health Centre. Flying advanced military medical personnel directly over the town and dropping them right at the hospital's doorstep was the fastest possible way to insert specialized trauma teams and specialized equipment (like ventilators) without losing time landing an aircraft at the airport and staging a ground transport. @OC_Scanner

This is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones, those who were injured and everyone affected. We know there are families waiting for news about their loved ones, and our thoughts are with them too.
I have been in touch with Premier Smith and federal Defence Minister McGuinty to offer assistance and our sympathies. Manitoba stands ready to help in any way we can. I also want to thank the first responders and everyone who stepped up to help during such a difficult time.
We will also lower flags to half-mast to honour the lives lost.

A burning Novator armored vehicle evacuated its crew after being hit by a Russian FPV drone.
The Novator drove away from its position while on fire and covered around 20 km to transport a National Police rifle battalion crew in Chernihiv region to their base. All police officers survived.
During four months of service, the vehicle completed around 100 missions and survived strikes from 10 FPV drones. It was used for logistical missions in eastern Ukraine, including the delivery of fuel, batteries, and other essential supplies.

In his address, President Macron has said the country is in need of calm after "far-left fringe groups and delinquents unleashed unchecked violence on our streets". He will consult with local authorities to contain any violence on the streets of France, including banning certain gatherings. He called on all political parties and trade unions to condemn violence, while indicating that the government will work with organisations and elected officials to develop solutions to the problems voiced by protestors. "Those that tell you to create disorder have one goal - to undermine the republic and steal the debate", he concluded.

The war with Iran put so much at risk. We are seeing that more with each passing day and these manifestations will only accelerate now. Totally foreseeable and thus avoidable. There is no amount of denial or propaganda that can overcome this reality. If it ended tomorrow with a successful negotiation, it would still be a massive loser strategically for the U.S.

Russian combatants and their family members should not be allowed to enter the EU. We need real entry bans as soon as possible.
Similar steps have already been taken at the national level, including in Estonia. They are feasible and they work.
An EU-wide move would be especially timely now, as Putin is grabbing new cannon fodder off the streets. Every Russian man recruited to fight against Ukraine should know: by signing a contract with the invading army, he is also signing a ban on entering Europe and the rest of the world.
Non-essential visas for Russian nationals must be restricted to the maximum extent across all European states. This is a matter of national security for every European country.
Russian diplomats should also not be able to move freely across Europe. Russia's attacks on Europe are no longer merely hybrid. They are growing in intensity and scale. This demands urgent action. Only tough pressure can stop Putin.
