This is urgent. Something unconscionable is happening, though we are sadly not surprised.
A draft resolution in Wyoming is asking Congress to allow the killing of healthy, unadopted wild horses and burros.
Read that again, please.
As reported by Wyoming Public Media, this proposal seeks to dismantle federal protections, and the language is chilling. This draft asks Congress to allow anyone to use helicopters or motor vehicles to capture or kill wild horses and burros, and further, to restore funding for horse slaughter inspections or allow states to fund them.
That could reopen the door to domestic horse slaughter, which we firmly believe Americans will not allow to happen.
It's important to note - this is still a proposal. But that also means NOW is the time to speak up. Not tomorrow, immediately TODAY given this is unfolding in real time.
As you've seen through our work, and our documentary WILD BEAUTY, our wild horses continue to be blamed for the destruction of our public lands. Yet a PEER analysis of BLM’s own land-health data found livestock grazing solely responsible for more than two-thirds of acreage failing the agency’s standards. Wild horses alone accounted for less than 1%.
These horses deserve better than to be scapegoated, stripped of protections, and killed.

Sec Burgum, the B.L.M. tells the public that slaughter is off the table, but they're doing it in plain sight using third parties. There are simple steps the bureau could take to end this, but they are turning a blind eye and wild horses & burros suffer.
